I am looking to possibly take up a bit of running. I quite often walk for miles and could probably go further if i wanted to. Where i have a problem is stamina. I have tried a short "jog" but only manage 100 metres or so before i have to stop.
What is the best way to improve this.

Also out of the cardio trainer app and Map My Walk. which is the better app?
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

I used the 'run fat !!!!! run' book to start me. I selected a 5k route the looped around to my house. I went out every day and walked the route for a week. Then I walked for 10 mins and started a slow jog starting at the same point on the route. I jogged for as long as I could and walked the rest. I extended the run over time until I completed the route. It wasn't a linear progression. Some days I went further than others. So you have to persist after the bad days. The RFBR line was 'every time you run you win' which I found helpful as success wasn't about how far or fast I went, just that I'd tried.
Initially, dodge hills on your run. They are exhausting. Take it as slowly as you want. Accept that there will be good days and bad days in terms of how far you go and how much you enjoy it.
I am so glad that I found running. I never thought I would run. I ran 8.5 miles on Thursday, something that I never thought I would do. The biggest benefit has been to my mental health. Everything is put in perspective after a run. I'm more resilient now.

Haven't been on here for a day or two and it was good to catch up with everything that is going on for everyone. And welcome to new arrivals!

Managed to get out for a run yesterday. Still feels hard work. It is a battle in my head at the moment and of expectations. There is part of me that wants to have reached a certain fitness level before I return to my running club after a couple of years absence, yet perhaps I need to bite the bullet and do it which will propel me to the next level.

C25K is for complete beginners, it's a very gradual build up - you start with more walking than jogging/running. You should always finish feeling you could do a bit more, and not suffer with soreness afterwards.
Where i have a problem is stamina. I have tried a short "jog" but only manage 100 metres or so before i have to stop.

I'm a great fan of the run/walk technique - start with a brisk walk for a few minutes, then jog a minute, walk briskly for a minute, repeat, then walk to cool down. Depending on your initial fitness level look for 20-30 minutes total, of which about two thirds is brisk walking. Running should be at a pace where you can easily hold a conversation.

If a minute jog/minute walk is too much at first, do 30 seconds jogging, 90 seconds walking. You'll find the stamina improves and you'll soon be doing 2 minutes jog/1 minute walk, then 4 jog/1 walk.

I even used run/walk all the way through my first marathon training, initially 4 min jog/1 min walk for 10 miles, up to finally 7 jog/1 walk for 22 miles, I ran the whole marathon (just under 4 hours) but that was the first distance run where I hadn't walked at all.

The walking is great because it gives you a chance to stretch out too, so consciously alter your stride to relax the muscles. Stop and stretch if you need to, nothing wrong with that.

Definitely yes. Me and the wife both have done.

Me, 43, 17 stone 6 (now and still on the way down ) completed C25K end of last year on treadmill, now doing 5k 3/4 times a week, still on treadmill until I'm lighter and there won't be as much impact on my joints. Best 5k 27 mins, not bad for a Fat B******.

The wife, 40 (already posted on this thread), started off at well over 20 stone, combination of 5:2 diet and jogging now down to .....(well lets just say a lot less) and running 10k sub 60mins and loves it, runs outside now and gets up at 5:15am to run 5k before work at least 3 times a week and gets really jittery if she can't get out to run for some reason.

She also does the 30 day shred and rowing for toning. Turned into a right fitness freak  :rotfl:

as others have said c25k is aimed at non-runners, from memory in the first week you aren't asked to run for more than about a 90 second consescutive stretch at any time, you walk more than you run initially & then progressively over nine weeks the program increases the amount of running until eventually you run for 30 minutes in one go

it might sound daunting but a lot of people make remarkable progress in a short period

There are quite a few Couch to 5K apps around if you have a smartphone. They're useful because you can listen to your own music or the radio but you are told when to start running and when to walk and when you're halfway. If you don't have a smartphone, you could put the NHS podcast on your mp3 player (or buy a really cheap one). I found it very useful doing it that way rather than keep looking at my watch because at first a minute running seemed endless !!!
