I agree that small and achievable goals are the best way to go. Although I'm signed up for a half marathon in June, I'm really not worried about my time, I only want to complete it, even if I need to walk at the end. For now I will aim to run 4 miles this week. I have ordered new running shoes to see if they help with the shin (£75 from sportsshoes.com and 10% cashback on quidco - very MSE). So I'll be breaking myself back into running and breaking in the new shoes at the same time :)

It doesn't matter how slow you go...you're lapping everyone on the couch :) x

If I do a new race, this is always my goal. Only twice have I not finished a racec. (er, I fell over both times and was in too much pain to continue)

Some bright spark decided that 30 second sprints was a good at running club last night. Stupidly, I agreed and ran with them. My response was to then cough my guts up.:(

I have a 10 mile race a week on Sunday. Some nutter of a club mate is talking me into doing a trail half marathon the following Sunday. I am running the London 10,000 on the 25th. So will have to pass on that. Not sure I could cope with 3 races 3 weekends on the trot.

  • How does everyone deal with a dodgy stomach when running? I’m training for my first ultramarathon in July (52 miles) and I’ve never previously done anything further than a half-marathon (I mean I’ve now run more than 13 miles in my training, but not in an organised event).

Last weekend I did a 22 mile run which went fine. I was generally feeling pretty ok, when all of a sudden at mile 19 I got the worst stomach ache ever. The last three miles were a combination of running and walking as I didn’t want to exert myself too hard for fear of having an ‘accident’!

I had my normal breakfast, but thing I might have possible eaten it a bit too soon to go out for my run. I also experimented with eating some solid food as I ran – dried fruit, a banana, a trail bar as well as a few Clif Shot Bloks and I had my CamelBak hydration pack on.

What does anyone eat on very long run that is fairly gentle on the stomach? Obviously I need to consume quite a few calories to get me through 8 to 10 hours of non-stop running!

Currently experimenting on this. Have tried gels; but no matter which ones I use, they make me want to gag. Currently using shot bloks, which are much better.

    There are energy bars too.

A friend used tinned fish a few years ago. He said he felt a bit sick after. He then had this huge burst of energy.

That was at a 24 hour event. In which he did 103 miles and came fourth. I was there as part of a team.

    Wow! Very admirable!

    ---

I did 5.8k yesterday. Didn't plan my route properly and only wanted to do 5k so ended up going way too fast at the start (4:15 per km for the first 2.5km) but ended up with an overall pace of 5:20 per km, which may not sound great but it is my fastest so far. Looking to get up to my first 10k in the next few weeks, and going to look for a competitive one. From then on it will be building towards the half marathon in October!

Great to read everyone else's stories.

I don’t have any problems with gels, shot bloks or energy bars I don’t think! But as I will be running so far I need some solid food in addition to them. To be honest I’d rather get by without anything, but whilst I have no problem doing a half-marathon without anything doing 52miles is a different story!

Tinned fish sounds quite interesting though thanks.

I did similar at the weekend. Went the wrong way and had to walk up 30 steps and walk down another 30. Not a mistake I wish to make again.

I looked a map and thought "that'll be around 5k" but it all turned out alright in the end. Overall I was happy

    Hi all,

I ran London marathon this year...have to say that it was one of the most amazing yet most painful things I have ever done.

Months of training failed me on the day when I injured my hip and had to limp/hobble/slow run for 10 miles. At about 23 miles I had had enough...the last 3 miles were my quickest 3 just because I wanted it to be over!

Never a runner until a couple of years ago and managed to complete a couple of halves. Still surprised myself that I entered London and completed it. Anyone can do it if they really want too. Definitely proved to me that if you are determined enough then you can do things!

Looking forward to my injury healing and getting back out to do some runs without marathon training hanging over me...seeing people running in the nice weather is really making me jealous (never thought I would say that).

Strange isn’t it? Dean Karnezes says in his book when he ran a 199 mile relay race solo his quickest mile was his very last one which he did at under 6 minutes – that was after running continuously for 198 miles and 48 hours!
