Are you Dean Karnezes?0 -
Do you all just run or do you incorporate other sports/activities into your life?
I'm trying to work out a fitness/weight loss plan and I think from previous experience running alone isn't enough, I'm trying to work out an achievable timetable to allow me to run 3 x a week and also do some more strength and cardio.
Well, the story begins.
Years ago, I had a fitness test to do something and failed. I was probably fat, not that fat but lots of kebabs and not much fitness. I attempted a Santa 5km Run, which I was beaten by a small child.
So, with that in mind, I used MapMyRun.com to plot a 3 mile loop from my house, then would run it whilst Mrs AO started to watch Eastenders/Corrie etc. I could be out and back, showered before both episodes had finished. I planned out and back, as if I ran half way, I would have to walk back. Well...walk or run...either way its distance and I would push the distance either way.
The 5km came, then it was the slow increase to 4.5miles, then 6.2miles (10km). With the first 10km under the belt, now on for the Great North Run. The plan was.. Great North Run, then the London Marathon.
Well, the Great North Run came and went, just over 2hrs 8mins which involved some slight walking. After that, I was rejected for London so the running ended.
I found a new sport, sort of cross country / fell running. I get to run along the Brecon Beacons, or even the Yorkshire Moors. I get to climb up and down Craggs, and run through Streams/Woods etc. The ideal run..would be a run up and down Mount Snowdon.
Since the GNR, I've completed a few half marathons and even the GNR last year where I set a new PB.. well I nearly cried when I seen the time...however I could not walk..
Well that's my story... it all starts with walking, jogging, then you never know where the story ends..
Id love to complete an Ultra 100 mile run..but what would I do with all that time... :P

Why don't you start with a 50miler first like I did?0 -
100km...
I love big round numbers. I shall probably never do such a thing, however maybe the OMM or something0 -
Anyhow... why can I maintain a 15.0km/h pace on the treadmill at a 1.0% degree gradient, however I cant even get close to that pace on the road...0

Intriguing! Like fell running, but not that. Probably very niche, given that you're worried about people guessing your identity if you reveal what it is. I'm going to guess skyrunning (running up mountains.)Do you all just run or do you incorporate other sports/activities into your life?
I'm trying to work out a fitness/weight loss plan and I think from previous experience running alone isn't enough, I'm trying to work out an achievable timetable to allow me to run 3 x a week and also do some more strength and cardio.
I do boot camp regularly as well as running. I also do yoga, climbing, kettlebells or swim occasionally. I think it's important to do strength, core and some flexibility work as well as running to prevent injury.
A typical week for me at the moment looks like this:
Monday: boot camp
Tuesday: Intervals
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: 5k at lunchtime, bootcamp in the evening
Friday: 4-8 miles tempo
Saturday: boot camp or rest
Sunday: 9-18 miles long run
You might like to read Run Less, Run Faster. It's about training plans where you run 3 times a week and crosstrain (hard) twice a week. Despite the name, it's definitely not an easy option. I think it's meant to be based on how triathletes train.
And in other running news from the world of Lizling, I'm probably going to try the local running club again. I heard at the pub last night that they've got new management and are making a big effort to be more accommodating to beginners. I've also been offered the opportunity to go to a different, less formal running club who train in the same place. Decisions, decisions...Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!

I did another half marathon yesterday (just on my own again - well with hubby on his bike!) slightly slower time but a much hillier route and it was a much more comfortable run. I love the long runs!0
