I wouldn't have a routine mammogram, as screening asymptomatic women has been shown to do at least as much harm as good, but it is of course the patient's own decision. People like this working in the mammography department certainly don't help matters.
I didn't know a routine mammogram in absence of symptoms can do as much harm as good.:(
Doesn't altogether surprise me though; having your breasts subjected to such extreme crushing till you feel they will explode can't possibly be good for them.0 -
When I went for my first mammogram, understandably a little apprehensive, I checked that I should remove my navel piercing. The nurse went into a rant about how irresponsible I was having my belly button pierced, how risky it was, how I was risking severe infection, how she wouldn't let her 22yr old daughter have one ("she wanted it done but I made her see sense") and how I should have known better at my age (I'd only had mine pierced 8 monthe previously at the age of 40).
In any other case I'd have said something back but didn't want to argue with a woman who was about to squash my t**s between 2 plates of metal. Bit my tongue but still wish I'd said something afterwards0 -
Totally unprofessional Zaksmum! I encountered one once years ago, l sat in a small side room with two other patients waiting for the nurse, when she came out she asked us our names after we'd mentioned them she pointed at us in turn and said 'right, so you're the wound dressing, you're the malaria jab and you're the smear test'
How l wished l was the wound dressing or malaria jab that day.!! I was mortified, but as a young 20 year old l daren't say anything, wouldn't happen now daft woman.
Happy moneysaving all.0 -

Would just like to comment in relation to the person who chooses not to attend a routine mammogram unless she is symptomatic. Please, please reconsider. I was diagnosed at the age of 42 with a Grade 3 advanced breast cancer last year. I was too young for routine mammograms and it was only because I had shooting pain in breast for a week that I initially went to the GP. Couldn't feel lump, GP couldn't feel lump, Registrar in breast clinic could feel a lump but I insisted on a mammogram. Within minutes of having that my life changed significantly. Ultra sound and mammogram showed a tumour of 2.6 cm that positioned in the breast so I could not feel it and cancer cells had spread to 7 of my lymph nodes. Apart from one week of breast pain (which I have been told umpteen times by health professionals is unusual - in fact its not!) I was not symptomatic and had I been of an age to have routine mammogram then it potentially would have been picked up at a much much earlier stage. I appreciate what you say about the potential risk of mammogram, but I understand the research suggests that the benefits outweigh the risks and I can honestly say no one wants to go through all the treatment I have been through in the last year and continue to go through to keep me alive.SPC No:118:j (6) £468.74 (7)

When I had a coil fitted the doctor mentioned that I had quite a large uterus!! I think it was only said as an explanation for why I had heavy periods and I wasn't offended by it but I still wasn't quite sure how to take it.
I have a coil and the doctor probably said this as there is different size coils, which is why they measure you with something internally before inserting the coil. When inserting mine they said I had a healthy cervix, which goes to show the regular servicing I get done on it has obviously been worth it...0 -
Each hospital Trust has a PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Services) department. They deal with complaints and CONCERNS. If the OP does not wish to make an official complaint but instead raise a concern then she should contact them setting out the circumstances and perhaps suggesting that the member of staff could benefit from additional training. PALS are required to deal with each concern and complaint raised with them and report the outcome back to the complainant. They can usually be contact via email through the hospitals website.SPC No:118:j (6) £468.74 (7)

zaksmumI feel like it's definitely put me off going again.
If you feel like that, I would definitely do something about it.
