Charming!! I would be pretty upset and angry too.

It's people like this who put me off having anything to do with the nhs, to be honest, though hopefully they're only a minority. The trouble is, they're unaccountable, and they think they can speak to the patient (especially a female patient) any way they like.

You just want to say to them, erm.. excuse me, this is a PERSON you're talking to, not a piece of meat.

    Grrr, Rant over!

I am a patient both in private and NHs system. I have to say that you get good and bad experiences in both, and while there is a bit more ' customer choice' in private and one hopes more time for staff to give the kind of service they WANT to give (I'm certain very, very few want to hurt or upset patients!) its not totally unheard of.

As it happens my most recent experiences eith nurses in the last fortnight good was private less great was NHs at a GP surgery.

Rude is rude and is always unprofessional and from your description the way in which this remark was made was rude.

That being said, I think there is a generational divide between what is professional behaviour . These days most professions have moved away from the cold impersonal approach and are much more chatty and informal. I know my parents and in laws are always shocked that all my clients call me by my Christian name and vice versa and if they hear me talk to a client in the phone can't always tell whether I am taking a work call or a personal call (I am a lawyer). This is how all my colleagues also interact with clients and is how the firm expects us to behave but outside their realms of experience as 60+ year olds.

I could certainly see circumstances where a nurse might say to me had I ever thought about a breast reduction with no offence meant or taken but the way in which things are said is important and rolling your eyes or exchanging snarky looks with a colleague won't ever be acceptable or professional.

I've already said I have no intention of complaining.

And anyway, what if, on inspection of your manly bits, the doc asked you if you'd ever thought about an enlargement procedure?

Wouldn't be laughing then, would you?

Dear me. I made the mistake of reading that post in a public place.

All I can say even if you are feeling sensitive how you feel is up to you, you are entitled.

If someone said something about the size of my vag during a smear I might be a bit mortified. I've never had a mammogram so can't compare. Sometimes stuff can be like water off a ducks back and sometimes not.

Small talk is inappropriate in those circumstances.
The nurse should have been aware of that.

If she carries on making 'small talk' she may well find someone who does makes a complaint about her.
If that does happen, it will be her who's !!!!ed up her career - nobody else.

I'd probably have shrugged off the incident if she'd said this:
    but coupled with this behaviour:

it would have got her the sharp edge of my tongue - and a lesson in the inappropriateness of her comments.

Normally I'm easy going and don't let things like this bother me. But if anyone says something a bit personal like that, they would indeed get the sharp edge of my tongue.

I was so taken aback, I couldn't believe she would say such a thing. Reminded me a tiny bit of the school bullies when I was a kid and the first in my (primary school!!!) class to have to wear a bra:(

And it could have put someone off from ever going again.

I think her behaviour was crass.

I feel like it's definitely put me off going again.

Quite apart from the woman's remarks, the mammogram was the worst I've had.

For the side angle, the top plate was on top of my collarbone while the lower one was under my boob and I felt crushed and sore all the next day because the pressure exerted was so great.

    I've never felt that before.:(
  • Although you've said you won't complain, OP I think it might be worth you registering a comment. The trouble is of course if you do that, and you happen to encounter her again, she might get even more spiteful.

I wouldn't have a routine mammogram, as screening asymptomatic women has been shown to do at least as much harm as good, but it is of course the patient's own decision. People like this working in the mammography department certainly don't help matters.

When I had a coil fitted the doctor mentioned that I had quite a large uterus!! I think it was only said as an explanation for why I had heavy periods and I wasn't offended by it but I still wasn't quite sure how to take it.
