thank you this is the proof of the trading standards act.

i visited the shell garage yesterday and they do now accept credit and debit cards however there is no sign up stating this - violation of the act as stated above. i asked where there sign was and they informed me they do not have one. ILLEGAL. there is also no sign up advertising halal only sandwiches. you have to check the label of the sandwich to find out.

But what about kosher sandwiches , where's THAT SIGN

Has it not occurred to you that the signs are marketing displaying multiple way of paying!

This is exactly what it is. If you see a Visa sticker etc, these are usually stickers sent by the merchant bank who provide the card terminal in order for you to advertise the payment methods accepted. Some places will have window stickers for the door to try and "entice" card payers.
The card companies etc. make profit from people using their cards, and so the stickers etc are simply promitional material.
    They are not compulsory.

You'll notice there are not stickers for cash, and it was rare to see stickers advertising cheques in the past, most cheque stickers were there to inform that cheques would only be accepted with a valid guarantee card and relevant ID.

However, as has been said countless times, the retailer has no legal duty to display any signs.

In the case of a petrol station, they legally have to accept cash if they have allowed you to fill up as once you have filled up, you owe them a debt for which they have to accept legal tender (ie cash).

They have no obligation to accept card and if, as OP says, the relevant signs should be displayed at the point of sale, then OP surely couldn't have known what payments were/weren't accepted until they entered the store after filling up, or if they popped into the shop first (in which case they'd already be aware of the no cash rule)

I think it's absolutely disgusting that the garage had an issue with their payments system and only put up a paper notice to inform their customers, rather than closing until they had the correct signage made up and displayed.

    It just shouldn't be allowed!
  • What i find disgusting is that they only do halal or kosher sandwiches..

What about rainbow sandwiches for lgbt
    Pink sandwiches for ladies
    Blue one's for boys

Sandwiches for all I say !

Actually what I find most disgusting ... Is limp flaccid service station butties ... Ah yes we need a viagra butty !
Spelling courtesy of the whims of auto correct...

Pet Peeves.... queues, vain people and hypocrites ..not necessarily in that order.

It is correct that it's a legal requirement to show all method of payments a retailer takes in their store at the point of sale ie cash tills these are usually the small signs beside the tills showing visa MasterCard Amex cash ect also shown on shop windows, doors ect. Trading standards will check for these among many others when they do their legality checks in all retailers , It is not illegal however to put a a4 stating cash only if the systems are down .if anything it is good customer service putting the sigh up at the pump giving customers the choice to fill up or not, these things do happen

I don't believe there is any legislation requiring retailers to advertise their methods of payment. It's done by some retailers just to assist the customer. If you can show a link to some law stating otherwise then fair enough, if you can't then no such law exists.
    It's someone else's fault.

So you're not boycotting Shell you are now actively harassing their staff?

Maybe you're not actually a troll, but a very sad lonely person with no life...
