Mop and bucket. Lakeland microfibre mop with head that unscrews and goes in the washing machine (occasionally). The floor dries quickly and the damp mop can be used for a quick wipe of muddy footprints.
  • i used to use a Polti Vaporetto 2100R Steam Cleaner - it was great, but i always feared it would remove the varnish from my hardwood flooring, so i returned to the old faithful boiling water and floor cleaner with pail and mop. My mop is one of the vileda cloth ones as i hate the string mops. It works well, but still nothing beats getting on your hands and knees, scrubbing brush in hand for a bit of back-breaking scrubbing effort!!:p

Tried no end of different fancy mop alternatives over the years - always went back to mop & bucket - I use an old fashioned janitor type bucket made of galvanised metal with the perforated cone squeezer thing on one side - can squeeze out a lot harder than a plastic one.

capful of zoflora in the water and the whole room smells lovely :)

Mop and bucket works well for me. I do the skirting and pipes as well. The 'shredded J-cloth' strands can get behind the pipes, great!

I gave my steam cleaner to my sister-in-law years ago. Steam can disinfect and freshen a surface but I don't believe it cleans at all. When you see those demonstrations where the steam is blasting through cooked-in stains on a cooker. Please know that is probably something like dried gravy granules or coffee because steam can not deal with dried greasy food residue on cookers or in ovens. Well not in my kitchen anyway :D

I use a mop and bucket. I use cheapo disinfectant, though vinegar and detergent have been used as well.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

mop and bucket here too. replacement mop head when needed from 99p shop. usually have 2 mop heads on the go and throw them in washing m/c once a week to freshen them up.
Teamwork means.......never having to take all the blame yourself ;)
  • I use an old washing-up sponge, plain water, keep rinsing it out under the tap, and vinegar or bicarb for grease. How clean does a floor need to be? I have no children or pets and I tend not to eat off the floor, so if it looks clean, that's good enough for me.

Are you all using thick or thin bleach?
    Does it make a difference?
A friend of mine picked up lavender scented bleach in the bottle shaped for going around the toilet bowl. She said she uses it for cleaning.

I use the thin bleach - 25p for a litre bottle of the value brand stuff.
I'm pretty sure that thick bleach is just the same basic chemical as thin bleach (chlorine?) but with thickening/gelling ingredients added to make it cling to surfaces like the inside of the toilet bowl - obviously this isn't needed if you're diluting it in hot water anyway. The more expensive ones are also sometimes scented, but adding a capful of zoflora takes care of that for me.
