Baring in mind this agency contaced me about this job
'We have had an overwhelming response to the advert but are working our way through the candidates. However, if you have gaps in your CV it is harder for an agency to place you, you will be more likely to secure a position if applying direct to the organisation.
I will consider your application and if you compare well to the other candidates I will be sure to give you a call'We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
You think it's better not to have a job to get a new one?

Really? You have never ever applied for a job that an employer advertsied with an agency? Very surprising.
The odd one maybe, My names is down with all the local agencies but nothing ever came from it not even an interview, and the only time the agency is in touch is with some random job miles away they can't fill. They don't seem interested if you're already employed as you can't start at the drop of a hat.0 -
This is because worse workers are more likely in the first place to have lost their jobs than good workers.
Do you not believe this to be the case, that companies drop bad workers in preference to good ones, or do you not believe that this skews the pool of unemployed (as a whole) to be of generally lower quality than the pool of employed people?
I hate to say it but, there is a degree of sense in this anecdote, though I sincerely hope its not a prediction of how recruiters deal with the increasing number of unemployed professionals who can certainly bring a wealth of experience and value to the table.
Many jobseekers on this site exhibit the same signs of "out of work" paranoia through their posts that would cause a potential employer to run a mile after interviewing. Add this to your "Bayesian mix", and it becomes clear how we see how hiring superstitions remaining firmly anchored in recruiters' psyches.0 -

Most immediate start jobs are prob temp roles and not the same as full time perm roles as not many of them start the next day. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The more gaps someone has on their CV the more this is going to flag to a potential employer, hence why many ask "reason for leaving" now. If the reasons are along the lines of redundancy/promotion etc that would be ok, it's when people have a long list of things like "sought new opportunity" etc the person looks less appealing if there are long periods of unemployment between these jobs and especially if the person didn't stay at the job for very long. Essentially the employer doesn't want to hire someone and train them for a permanent position if they are going to leave shortly after. It's also why being overqualified is a problem.
And the unemployed are more likely to have gaps on their CV than the employed.
For my employer, unless they are looking for temps, they factor in a reasonable notice period into the timeframe anyway when they are looking to hire someone, and if they happen to hire someone who is unemployed it's merely a bonus if they can start earlier.
It is also to do with skill set - many jobs require someone with experience doing x y and z and someone who has been unemployed for 2 years is just naturally less likely to have this skill set than someone who has been employed for that time and has had a chance to improve/expand on necessary skills and undertake training in something that might be useful in their next job.0 -
So you have applied for jobs advertised by agencies?

If memory serves me right I did apply and the agency phoned me, but it was a temporary role with an immediate start as you say.0 -

To be fair, they haven;t turned you down yet.
They have said they are still deciding upon their shortlist.0
