Its not uncommon in a lot of sectors to have a 1 week notice period. I have advertised positions for immediate start before but I wouldn't have expected someone to walk out of their job without notice, so I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. Notice periods would be discussed at interview.

Immediate start is surely just a way of saying ASAP, rather than recruiting for a position you know you're going to need in a few months.

I've definitely never had pressure from a new employer not to serve my full notice period. Nor would I put that pressure on someone else.

This job is to start on Monday as it says that too.

Yes I see the problem. Could you not take any old job in the meantime rather than taking accounts? Even if it is stacking shelves or similar.

Even those who are happy to take 'any old job' can struggle to get it, due to so many chasing the same job. Or to lack of experience.

I have a relative who works there who got me the interview.

Lucky you. Plenty of us don't have the luxury of a family member to get us an interview

I know you're talking about the overqualified/over experienced. I meant if there's say a job waitressing or whatever, if you've never done that sort of work before, they'll take someone else who has that experience.

1 interview for a job which I didn't get. Hardly major.

It can be better to be unemployed especially in unskilled jobs. I'm currently working in a warehouse as a picker while I carry on applying for something I actually want to do and I basically got that job because I was unemployed.

The agency was only putting through people who'd been unemployed for 6 months as they could get some sort of fee for taking us on. They even made me wait a week and a half to start as I hadn't been out of work for a full 6 months at interview.

In N.I companies can get a grant for taking on someone who has been unemployed. How can I compete against the likes of that?
