I looked through my ISP (Claranet) site and discovered they have an eFax service. So I signed up. Perhaps every ISP does this.

I've had a (rarely used) fax number associated with my mobile, and used to recover them by sending to another number. If at home, this saves a walk to the shop.

Mine does too. Another reason (though I didn't say it at the time) why I doubt that the OP has much extra benefit for anybody who has some sort of access to a PC - which includes logging on via a net cafe, for example.

As I say - if you can get to a PC you can (in the vasy majority of cases) collect faxes directly.

Squeaky I'm sorry to argue but you are entirely missing the point, as elaborated best by BexTech. You are arguing that this service is useless.

If you want to collect faxes directly to the PC, it must be attended ie switched on, and the modem available for use.

Using a third party service such as the OP or others (I see eFax mentioned on several threads in fact), allows the message to be stored on the providers server and received the next time you go online to collect emails.

Your last post seems to be both agreeing with and contradicting this idea.

Actually the OP relies on using a PC as well; I can't see why you beg to differ with something that similar to what you've just also suggested

In fact the eFax service has other paid options which include sending

    Perhaps most of these do

My primary objection is that the OP reads to me to be inferring that this 0870 fax to email is the only route to go by, and it isn't by a long chalk.

Quite apart from leaving modem and fax software active on a broadband enabled PC there are many ISP's offering fax to email so you can collect them at leisure.

So this 0870 system is only useful if you have neither available.

And on that score I agree.

Your primary objection has been made in your seventh post.

And I disagree; the service is described as a possibility, not a universal panacea. Other similar arrangements have been added, and only now you choose to attack the predication of the entire thread.

This from someone who asks advice about the cost of calling 0870 numbers, which have been extensively debated for months.

I'm sorry that you appear to offer a recipe for confrontation. If everybody offering advice on the Phones Board were shot down like this, the flow of info would dry up.

    Ok

I started by asking a polite question.

    I ended by agreeing.

In the middle was some interesting debate :)

For anyone contemplating leaving their dial up connection switched on it might be wise to read this recent thread here.

My dial-up isn't connected, just my modem and fax software. I have more than adequate cover against viruses and spyware which I update regularly and have never yet been caught by a virus. Never any attempt at a virus infestation blocked which originated via my modem.
