FREE Fax to Email Service

For anyone who doesn't have a fax machine but has a need to receive faxes gtitelecom offer a free service where they provide you with an 0870 number (I know it's against my religion to dial these numbers  but I can accept it in this case) to which anyone can send you a fax, the fax is then forwarded to your nominated email address in a TIF or JPG format. There is no charge to receive the fax as I guess they make their money from the 0870 number.

But there's loads of free fax software about that would let you accept the fax exactly as is directly to your PC.
Places like tucows.com have plenty of shareware and low cost choices.
So what would make this 0870 service better?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Free fax to email was what I read.
So if you can get your fax as an email (to your PC) you can get it direct (to your PC) with the right software.
I still don't see the point of this service.?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I don't see where you are coming from, other than it appears you are mixing something up.
For example I have broadband, which means I removed my dial-up modem from my computer, to ensure it doesn't dial out without my knowledge. I used to have fax software on my PC so my PC would take a fax call.
With these numbers you do not need to have a dial-up modem connected, you just receive the fax in an email.
Granted you could set up FoIP, but finding the right software is difficult.
Unless you have another solution that does not require a connection to your landline? It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... I left my old modem in place and still have it on the land line precisely so that I could keep my PC-fax capability. I'd never considered removing the phone line - there's no need.
That is why I was asking what's the point.
OK - I'll accept - if you haven't got your PC on a phone line then yours is an option.
Except for whatever the 0870 cost is. How much is it, may I ask?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Up to 8 pence per minute, to the caller, non to the recipient. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Surely if you want the fax direct to the PC, then it must be turned on and not on the phone or with automatic v92 internet-modem-on-hold facility. An independent convert-to-email system will store it on a server until you download.0

this looks like a really useful service if you dont actually have access to the internet yourself and perhaps use email and internet facilities from the local library (who would therefore not want you to add a fax dialer or software to their machines) or from a net cafe. also useful for when you are travelling - you could still get your faxes on your email. my friend is in asia at the moment and is having problems sending faxes to his mortgage company and getting speedy reponse from them - this kind of thing might help his problem.Blah0

Welcome to the Phones Board.squeaky wrote:Except for whatever the 0870 cost is. How much is it, may I ask?
You can find the cost of making 0870 calls on BT's website. Cheaper call providers do not seem to offer lower rates than BT, so if using other providers, dial 1280 prefix to carry the call over BT.
For other 0870 calls, but not this service obviously, you can often find alternative geographic numbers at http://www.saynoto0870.com/ and use cheap call providers. See Martin's Callchecker for more details.0
