    Phew, that's a relief!

I haven't yet been able to find what I'm looking for, but, like with most family history things, I'll check back periodically, as sometimes new information becomes available.

Family history research is amazing and I know a couple of people who have employed a person local to the area that they know their family goes back to and it was very thoroughly done but as you say a little pricey.
Not quite the same but my MIL was an only child with one cousin who was also an only child. They lost touch in the early 70s and as she is now in her mid 80s she often wondered what happened to him. We contacted the Salvation Army for her with as much info as she could supply and within a few short weeks they had traced her cousin and they have since met twice. It is so lovely for them both to be back in touch and they get on so well and have so much to catch up on about their lives. They speak weekly on the phone as he lives 200 miles away and hope to meet again over the summer when we can take her.

Heavens, yes, Watty, I wouldn't have liked that! Those links that I put up, by the way, I didn't realise you had to make a payment :( sorry about that!

Angela - that's one of the lovely things about family history research, we've met lots of distant relatives, and got back in touch with a few close ones, too.

How lovely that Angela's MIL found her cousin again after all those years.

On my mum's side I have quite a few cousins and I've remained in touch with many of them, but my dad was the only relative that I knew on that side of the family. I know the whereabouts of some distant cousins, about 4 times removed, as they are still farming at a location which has been in the family for over 200 years. Bit, as it's such a distant connection, I'm very shy about getting in touch. I'm hoping for closer relatives, and this cousin from Cornwall was my best hope - it is something I *will* follow up at some point.

We've been doing yet another long put off task. We've washed the front block driveway and put new sand in all the joints. It looks much better, it really was filthy!

All the work we've been doing is paying off, as the back and front gardens are looking better than they have in years.

    Things are finally Getting Done.:)

How lovely of the Salvation Army. I was really impressed by that story. Thank you :)
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

Hello all, I think summer may have finally arrived.

Had a nice day out on Monday at Hampton Court. I've never been there before, and thought it was excellent. It was a coach outing. We had lunch at a hotel (fish and chips) then we were taken on to Hampton Court. To be honest, I would have forgone the lunch to have spent more time at the Palace, as there wasn't time to see everything, and I wanted to spend more time in the gardens. Coach trips are great for getting you to places easily, but there's always either to little time at the destination or too much time.

    But I'm glad we visited.

I received my £40 One Poll pay out today, so I'll delete my account now. That just leaves You Gov. I'm currently on 4525 points, so getting close to the £50 payout, but surveys are still thin on the ground.

My Halifax Reward account gives cash backs on a few selected retailers. I was due the grand sum of 85p in May, but it wasn't paid into my account, so I decided to call them to enquire. Honestly, I nearly lost the will to live - it took the person on the other end of the line 20 minutes to deal with my enquiry. I ended up with £2, for my cashback and the cost of my call. I suppose every little helps, but it was a bit of a kerfuffle!

We will be home tomorrow, as British Heart Foundation will be collecting some of our larger items for donation. We are tantalisingly close to finishing the decluttering. Maybe just another car load to the tip and the loft will be clear. There will be a few more oddments for eBay, but we are nearly there.

We went to the cinema this afternoon, using Meerkat Movies again. We saw San Andreas. It was pure Hollywood........ But I must admit I was on the edge of my seat!

Good grief, the forum! This is the third time of trying to post on your thread ... I'm glad you got to Hampton Court - I went a few times when I lived in London.

I'll race you to the finish on yougov ...

    You're on, especially as I had a 75 point survey today!:rotfl:

The forum has been really bad over the last day or so. I gave it up as a bad job last night.

Today was a day at home, as we we had our donations collected by BHF, who turned up mid afternoon. So that's another batch of stuff dealt with.

It gave me a chance to catch up on housework etc, and one of my least favourite activities - micro-managing the tax office! Mr Goldie's current pension income is just under his tax allowance, so he shouldn't pay any tax this year. He has two annuities, one is being paid tax free, but the other has £7.80 tax deducted each month, with is wrong. Turns out HMRC have split the tax code between the two annuities, but have allocated too much to one annuity, and too little to the other. Therefore I had to fire off yet another letter, telling them what to do!

Tomorrow is another home day. Mr Goldie has a dentists appointment, to remove the root that the other dentist left in when she extracted the tooth. Hope it's not too painful for him, it sounds horrible!

Ancestry have emailed me to tell me it's free access for 5 - 7 June, so I'll be doing the research that I want to do - need to confirm a suspicion. Hopefully I'll be able to post all about it soon!

  • The tax office are a nightmare. I hope they take notice. You are very wise to write rather than phoning as they are terrible for keeping you hanging on.

    Have a good weekend,
