    HELP

Currys are offering a p/x for an old vacuum of between £75 - £100 off a Dyson. Anybody got any opinions on them please?

    Hi Valli

I use numerous Dysons of differing varieties at the homes of my customers. I like the manoeuvrability of the Ball uprights (DC25?) but find the hose and tube assembly a PITA and the suction isn't all that great through these. One has a DC04 which is very good but it is SO LOUD I actually worry about my hearing if I use it for a long spell. One is an ancient DC01 which has seen better days but as it's probably 15+ years old it's probably a good indicator of lifespan. My MIL recently swapped her aging DC04 for a new model which looks very similar in shape etc but the tube is plastic and feels very cheap and insubstantial compared to what she had before.

My vac died a couple of weeks ago and I did consider a dyson when buying a new one but decided against it, purely because I think they're somewhat overpriced. However if you're knocking up to £100 off the RRP it might make them better VFM in your eyes.

I got a Sebo Felix instead which was £228 for the top model and thus far, I am really happy with it; I'd even go so far as to say it's the best vac I have ever used, let alone owned :) It's weighty to lift but easy to push, the suction is phenomenal, it's easy to manoeuvre, picks up well at the edges and comes with a hard floor tool as well as the standard "head". The whizzy turbo brush head is fantastic for stairs too.

Could you pop to Currys/JL and have a push around of a few, see what you like the feel of?

Valli.. I wouldn't have a Dyson if I was PAID to have it.. I had one.. it lasted 3 months before the motor burnt out, it went through 3 or 4 belts at each use and the filters were forever clogged.. I spent more time taking it apart and putting it back together than I could using it!! The newer ones seem to be even worse.. God knows why they have such a good name they are a pile of crap!! expensive to purchase made of cheap shoddy parts because they can make a fortune out of customers on filters and belts!!!

Glad I'm not the only one! ;) I'm supposedly awful to my children simply because I refuse to allow them to live in nests of doom, wear dirty socks & really do expect them to clean up after themselves, well at 10 & 13 it's how it should be! :rotfl:

Oooh Piggers, I have to step in after that post! I inherited my mother's DC02 Dyson and although various bits had to be replaced because everyone kept whacking things with it and the plastic perished and was brittle because it was so old, it kept going like a proper old trooper. I know taking it to the tip meant that it ended up back in the the middle of Plymouth in Regenerate, so it was cannibalised for spare parts or rebirthed for a new lease of life. I bought another Dy$on (reconditioned) - an Animal - no idea of the number, and although it's heavy, it sucks up everything and it's easy to empty. I hate, loathe and detest vaccuum cleaner bags and wouldn't have another bag type machine for all the tea in China. *cof* *cof* *cof* *sneeze* Revolting.

On a side note, I bought a real cheapie from 1id1 and the dy$on heads fit it, it's light and it's now over at the chalet. The suction on that little thing is far, far stronger than the suction at Morribunds car wash (£1 for 4 mins), but I have nowhere I can plug in a vacuum and reach the car, either at the house or the chalet. Grr.
    Better is good enough.

Might not bother with a Dyson then...

have had a marathon cook-off in the kitchen

I have made 1 banana cake (only four bananas but I treat that part of the ingredients as advisory rather than essential so wasn't worried) and a lemon drizzle cake. (I am feeding revising offspring) and have made a huge veggie chilli. Whoopsied pittas thawing; I will have that for tea. DD's at work this evening 5-10 so she and I have had jacket spuds, which, as the oven was on for the cakes was very MSE!

I am also supporting DS in how to write pre-decimal currency (so far we have had to do 1/6 and 6d - one shilling and sixpence and sixpence for younger flyers!) Sadly I can STILL convert.

    Shopping done
New bed made for fluffy dim cat who kept following me around the house as Woody is in his bed and he can't cope with it, I have removed all the Governor stuff I should be dealing with from a huge basket and made him a bed in the dining room/my study.

DH still making the woodstore and has taken the heads off a patch of lovely tulips and peonies which I was only admiring yesterday.

Shopping away, going to make pastry base for LMP and then hoover and tidy the DR for tonight.

    Afternoon all.

Flying here of a fashion but only because there is only me here :D

    - Bins throughout the house have been emptied (so I could nose at why our road was cordoned off by the police. Apparently it was an armed siege due to a man with knives in a house according to the local paper...at least it wasn't 'shots fired' or a dangerous dog again)
    - Fridge cleared out
    - Bathroom has been scrubbed (just needs the floor doing)
    - accounts updated
    - a bit of paid stuff done
    - tided up right through
    - washing up done
    - tumble drier condenser and filters cleaned out
    - washing machine filter cleaned out
    - kitchen sink drains blasted with soda crystals/salt/boiling water twice
    - kitchen cleaned (just the floor to do)
    - 4th load in the washing machine (and I've also done a clean wash)
    - 2nd lot of towels in the drier (too many for 1 load)

My plan is to spend the rest of this afternoon sorting out my playlists on utube as I have loads of reference videos I no longer need, catch up on reading my magazines (I have some from December I still haven't managed to read!) and juggle washing as needed :D I'm slowly working on a Mr A delivery, but figured I'd see if I can last until Monday since its just me ;)

    Hi all

Doggie walked, food shopping done and put away, few little jobs ticked off here and there but thats about it. Very tired today.

Been working out my finances, especially in the light of the fact that DSs DLA ends later this year and he goes onto PIP (scary thought). We can survive, but it means there is no chance of me losing the second job any time soon.

Honey, I think thats exciting too. I am bad enough when the kids get their name in the local paper for sports stuff!!!

Oh and vacuum cleaners. Henry for me, I binned the expensive and rubbish vax I bought and got a henry earlier this year and I love it!

Off to pootle some more, hm pizza for tea, might make a pudding.

*think* that's what it is its upright small purple and has a ball, I think its fab. I have had it about 2years (i think) its small enough it can used by my 1&2&5 year olds and can fit in my tiny cupboard under the stairs.

I have only skim read back, I am going to have a read of the list and see what can be done :)

I did have a really odd meter reader guy if he should get one for his wife for Christmas.... If you would like to stay married that will be a NO!
