We'll let you know by the end of the week?

I had one of these rare things called an interview at the start of the week, I thought it went well enough but got this old phrase at the end and as per usual heard nothing. In fact I've had this phrase at 90% of the interviews I have been to and have never heard anything so am wondering does "We'll let you know by the end of the week" mean "You've been unsuccessful now go away"? Has anyone ever been told this and got the call and got the job? I think it is damn right rude not to inform people who have taken the time to attend and interview and in my case lost 3 hours pay.

My friend had an interview and heard nothing. Until a phone call Friday afternoon the following week saying '\We are looking forward to see you on Monday'.
The employer send her a letter the day after the interview and she never received it. I think they allowed her to start the following week as her then current employer had a week's notice.

Sometimes when they say they will let you know by the end of the week they are interviewing more people and won't be rushed into a decision. If you haven't heard anything at the end of the week, call and ask for feedback.0

It's happened to me, more than once (fortunately). On one occasion (the job I'm in now) they called me at the end of the week to say that they'd actually not be able to let candidates know until the following week - an unusual, but appreciated gesture. Manners cost nothing and in this day of email a standard email could easily be sent to those who were unsuccessful, which would take no time at all.0

If you've been receiving the same treatment many times, have you considered what you can do differently in order to avoid such treatment?
Thinking in this way will open up new avenues for you. What's the point being stuck in your old ways all the time? What have you got to lose? If it isn't working, fix it!
In future, one of your follow up questions should be -
1. In the event I haven't heard back in say a weeks time, I would like to note down the name and contact number or email, of you or the department that will be handling feedback please?
You need to have a pen and paper ready to write this down. Show them the action of actually pulling out your pen and paper and have the look of I'm not taking no for an answer.
The question I've wrote out was a quick one, but you want to tailor it with a few buzzwords that interviewers like to you use like "Feedback is important to me as it gives me an indication of my performance and allow me to develop as an individual blah blah so can I have your name number etc etc. as above.0 -
I think employers should always contact unsuccessful candidates, it's just basic manners. However it is quite possible they have more candidates to interview, it's not uncommon for them to say this and still get the job.
However don't expect anything more than a 'you were unsuccessful' message if you don't get the job. There was a recent topic in here where it was discussed that the vast majority of employers won't give feedback beyond 'there was a more suitable candidate'. Although this probably isn't the real reason, they'll mostly be unwilling to give genuine feedback.0 -
I know it's not much comfort but I do wonder whether an employer who didn't have the manners to let unsuccessful candidates know, would be someone you'd want to work for? I know it's common to not let people know if they're not selected for interview. I don't agree with this but I can understand the reasoning to some extent, and at least this is usually shown in the job ad.
I'm currently job hunting myself and have just had a disastrous interview. I will have to wait about 2 weeks between the interview and my rejection though! I know the people who interviewed me (presently volunteering for the organisation) so it's unlikely that they won't let me know either way. I think this organisation does get back to unsuccessful interviewees as a matter of course.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -

I totally agree with you that it is rank bad manners not to tell a candidate they have been unsuccessful in interview. This has happened to me just once thankfully (but I have not really had many interviews).

Oh i wouldn't go by that. My current employer was sweet as pie, He phoned me the same day telling me i had the job. Once i signed the contract everything changed. A more horrible person i have yet to meet.0 -
I've always phoned back if I haven't heard, and encourage others to do likewise.
both my partner and I currently have jobs when neither interviewer had called back, but we called to enquire - and both persistedthey gave us the jobs. (My boss was just terrible at organisation, and 'hadn't got 'round to letting you know'...a month after the interview!! My partner's firm said they were impressed by his tenacity, and that he was the only person who did actually phone back to check, even though lots of people suggested they would!.)

+1 for call back & (should the matter arise another time) asking whom to contact for decision/feedback.
Whether it's bad manners, cowardice or just caught-up-with-stuff barely matters - you as a potential empoloyee would like to Know.0
