You miss my point. In the OP's case, the illegality is the tyre, not any MOT fail.

Drive on that, without taking to an MOT - the vehicle is illegal. Whether you know that tyre's bald or not.
Take it for an MOT, fail, go home and change the tyre - the vehicle is legal, so long as the old MOT hasn't yet expired.
    .

While it's true that the old MOT is valid, it would still be an offence to drive to and from the MOT with a defective tyre and the existence of an MOT appointment wouldn't confer indemnity on that issue.

However if it does get taken there and fails, change the wheel before leaving the site and they can do the retest straight away.

OP, why don't you just stick a sharp object in the bald tyre, ring your break down company saying you've got a puncture that you can't fix, they'll come out and replace the tyre with the one in the boot. Then take the bald tyre and get a new tyre fitted.

Or grow a pair, find some tools and change it yourself?

A simple answer to not being able to find the jack and tyre lever
jack and tyre lever (other jacks and levers are available...);).

Although I must admit I'm a bit puzzled how anyone would lose their jack/lever given I always leave mine in the car (they're utterly useless to me if they're not).

Re the failed MOT test, whilst it doesn't invalidate your old MOT cert, if you're driving around after getting the fail without fixing the issue the Police are likely to be very unimpressed, given it would have specifically pointed out the reason the car is unroadworthy (and thus the driver has chosen to continue driving it knowing it is not in a suitable condition.

Thats a wheel wrench, not a tyre lever.

Op Try your local breakers yard for a jack.

If you car fails the MOT is means its a defective and if the plod pulls you over it would be a few points (or worse) and possibly the destruction of the car

Since when was destruction of the car a penalty for a bald tyre?

He's not arguing just correcting your mistake.

    You don't need a spare.
It is not part of the mot test
And the boot isn't opened during the test, so it won't be seen.

You will not be issued with an advisory for a defective spare.
Incorrect, the boot is usually opened to assess the seat belt and suspension mountings.
Note: It is usually necessary to open the bonnet to inspect front suspension components. It may be necessary to inspect the inside of a luggage compartment or boot to effectively check prescribed areas and testable items that otherwise would not be seen.

And spares arent only in the boot.
Anyway, Op buy a new tire and get it fitted. No tools needed. One good spare, one roadworthy car thats going to pass a mot and no points/fine/car crushed/public flogging. Jobs a goodun.

Could be risky. If you don't have the wheelbrace, they may refuse to do the job, they won't do it on your drive unless you have homestart cover either.

My brother got a puncture once in some huge 4x4.
When the Nice Man rocks up he asks where the spare is:-
    "Don't have one"
Then he asks where the sealant & compressor are:-
"Missing, must have been taken out/used by the previous owner"

Then the Nice Man gets back in his van :rotfl:

(Actually, he was a Very Nice Man and he used his own compressor to blow the tyre up first)

He said there were Rules he had to follow. If the spare was there and punctured, he could take it and my brother to a tyre place to get it fixed, then fit it, but no spare or sealant, and tough, couldn't even take brother and the punctured wheel off the car.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
