-They will accept the FSCS cheque and split the £5 which they'll send to me as a cheque since I don't have a current account with them.

That plus the backdating really is stunningly good customer service. Wish I hadn't banked my cheque now!

What was really refreshing was I spoke to one person the whole time and they didn't have to put me hold to ask someone else for information. She had already dealt with someone in the exact situation (EBCU/FSCS etc) and figured whatever the circumstance, the customer shouldn't lose out.

My God! It makes Nationwide seem like a Mickey Mouse operation in comparison where members of one team don't even talk to each other.

What's the consensus opinion on Punjab National Bank? Out of the frying pan into the fire, or quite considerably bigger and more stable? I see they have 5 branches across a lot of the south of the UK.

My personal experience with PNB has been good so far. This is the first time I have been with them. They certainly are not DCU as has been pointed out above; Clear T&C's, friendly staff and good service. It only took a day for PNB to decide FSCS cheque is ok (they obviously need the statement with it). The nearest branch to me is 35 miles away / aprox 45 minutes drive.

All gone smoothly with First Direct - despite an initial concern that the statement wasn't an original. All now sorted. They are transferring my funds into my ISA by close of business.

I am tempted to try FD if Nationwide don’t deliver soon. Presumably you just pay the cheque into your FD current account and they do the transfer – following a phone application and a submission of the transfer forms?

Also are they backdating interest to 14 May?

Minor progress with my efforts to pay my cheque into a new Nationwide ISA. The ISA account now shows online. With a £0 balance. It took them an entire week to achieve that.

The Branch had previously told me it is impossible to open one of their ISAs without making a deposit. They seem to be making things up as they go along but I live in hope that they manage to update my balance with the cheque amount (with or without the extra £5) before long. They are certainly making a bit of a meal out of it.

Energy Saving Champion I've been Money Tipped!
Received a telephone call from Barclays they are still looking into position and would get back as soon as it has been cleared with HMRC!! This is 5 working days since I raised the query with them so not long in banking terms.

From reading the other posts I feel that I still may have a problem, as I paid my FSCS cheque into my Santander account to earn interest whilst waiting the result. I now fear that even if Barclays agree to accept the money, how will they feel about accepting a cheque from my own current account.

Whilst I know it should be allowed as under HMRC guidelines but I think it might just be yet another hurdle. At this rate my stand off with Barclays might last as long as the original "limbo" period with DotCom.
I was thinking I might just pay the money into an account with West Bromwich @1.4% and although not an ISA under the new rules( if they are implemented) from next April I would get the interest tax free under the £1000 new tax free interest allowance.

Although Leeds didn't get back to me, I phoned them on another matter and when I checked about the is a positron, they said I'd been authorised to send them my cheque. So I shall give it a go at the weekend, recorded delivery.

Luckily they've extended the transfer deadline to the end of June because of all the isa delays they've had

Nationwide managed to do it - my ISA balance now reflects my cheque, including the fiver of the Basic Share account.

Wow! I thought they would insist on putting the £5 into a normal account. I'm still waiting for the first class post from Skipton so the race is one between the two.
