    it is DEFINATELY -46!!

Sorry to add to the general repeating but there is NO other answer!!
If they dare say it is anything else I'm going to phone up and demand a PSP as compensation!!!!

Brackets, Orders, Mulitplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.... BODMAS

Very basic calculators will work it out wrong but a Scientific calc or better will give you the correct answer!

ps I think it's a very interesting question but I am a maths teacher so I am cool.... guess what we will be talking about in class tomorrow....

Umm.. I have just clicked the link at the beginning of this thread and find that -46 is an option. Was there a mistake in the possible answers when you folks entered?

So that's where I am going wrong in maths ................????????????????????? You have to put brackets in if they aren't there.................... too much for me this. I wonder if the "Hot Brain" game has got the answers correct.

It's not an appalling question, it's an interesting one; why else are we talking about it.

Applying the rules of operator precedence, i.e. apply time and divide before plus and minus, you get -46. It's the sort of question we used to get at school. They've been cunning with their answers.

*It was an appalling question as to begin with -46 was not an answer. They just changed it, probably after getting complaints. We're discussing it for two reasons, because they didn't have an option for the correct answer to begin with and because quite a few people don't understand the rules of maths.
