MOT failed

Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
Hi yeh,

We went to get MOT done yesterday and was given same advice like last year. Here are the reason why MOT failed.

2013 report

1. (Both front and rear) Brake pipe excessively corroded.

2. offside track rod end ball joint has excessive play.

2014 report

1. Near side front track rod end ball joint has excessive play
2. Nearside front (straight) suspension arm has excessive play in a ball joint
3. Offised front brake pipe excessively corroded.

From the two report I can see failure is for same reason on different sides. And point 1 from 2013 report and 3 from 2014 report are similar. Im not sure why things will fail when it was done last year properly? We took the car back with out getting it sorted. Is some one fooling us.

Vehicle details:

525i , 71k miles, 53 reg.

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Vidhya

    Try a different testing stsation?
But remember the car is old now, so some component failures are inevitable.

    No, not fooling you.

You doubtless paid to get last years jobs sorted, which they were.

Now the bits that were still serviceable last year have deteriorated to the point of failure.

There are lots of bits of brakepipe on a car, front & rear are not front off side, and you had the other trackrod end changed so it is still ok.

Get the current fails fixed and you will get another year of cheap motoring, you won't buy a replacement for what it costs to fix this one.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • If a ball joint or bush has failed, its on the cards that the opposite sides parts won't be long following suit.

Presumably following last years failure, you rubbed down and greased all the surviving brake pipes, or did you get them all changed last year.

Have to admit, I'm very surprised that a 53-plate BMW is starting to suffer badly from rotten brake pipes.

Why be surprised, if the vehicle is kept outside all of it's life, it is 11 years old you know?

Because brake pipes on "lesser" makes have been plastic-coated for decades, and outlast the life of the vehicle. I've got a couple of brake pipes to replace for an MOT at the moment - on a 25yo VW van, and even then it's only very short lengths right next to unions.

I agree, I suppose the OP may just take on board what the testing station had reported (with a view to them completing the work), although it's not impossible for a car of that age to suffer some wear and tear.

Pretty standard fare for a 5 that's over 7-8 years old. They are very heavy on tyres and front suspension and the brake pipes, especially the front to back long lines, go because of their canny placement of being mostly exposed along their length, but are hidden in nice rust traps on the offside and along the axle beam.
    A cheap MOT.
