Thiefing Petrol Station (Esso - Deptford Park)

They are regulated by trading standards and are allowed to over-measure (i.e. give you more than you pay for) but not under-measure (giving you less).
If the dispensers are giving out more than the indicated quantity then the garage owners/operators could well find themselves being prosecuted by HMCE.
This is because their VAT bill can be based on the indicated amount dispensed from the pumps and if more fuel than the indicated quantity is going out this means that the garage would be paying less VAT then they should be.
A small error would only result in the loss of a few pennies, but over the course of a year, this would soon add up.0 -
reason why is because all tanks have a air gap..if you fill right up the filler neck there is no air gapIanMSpencer wrote: »FWIW once when I had a Ford Explorer I managed to put about 85 litres into a 75 litre tank. I contacted trading standards and they said they test loads of pumps and they never have found a problem, is tried and tested technology.
I'd not bet a car guage against a petrol pump guage - and in 30 years of driving I've never heard or come across a faulty pump that registered and did not dispense.0 -
makes you wonder, if fuel stations want to commit fraud and give you less fuel than paid for they probably could do it.
beofre anyone says big oil companies would never do that. Look up "salad oil scandal" a pretty big company inflated in stocks by declaring they had more oil than actually and before an audit they devised a system to inject water into the vats so the oil rises to the top and they can demonstrate they have these thousand gallon vats of oil when in fact the oil was just 1 ft deep and the resst underneath was water.
The only way to know for sure is to use the fuelly system and only fill up to the brim from empty and see what the stated volume is.
Since everything is done electronically these days it would be pretty easy to scam consumers and taxman.
1) pump 1/40th less than what the meter states. 1/40th is neither here nor there. It wouldnt rouse suspicion.
2) charge full price of what the meter states
3) rig the accounting software so that it appears the buyer was charged a higher rate for the less [true volume] fuel. This will even out the accounting for volume of reserves held into depot.
4) retain the accumulated 1/40th and sell on.0 -
How come most petrol stations are run by Asians? I live in quite a rural area and I see virtually no ethnic minorities until I go to a petrol staiton, odd, anyway.
What really annoys me about petrol stations is when I don't fill up but put in, say £40. I blast the nozzle all the way then tease until the last drop to get to an exact £40, put the nozzle in then, £40.01. F,... sake, 1p added!
This happened last week. £40.01. I said to the chap, " I think you need to look at your nozzle as I replaced it after filling and it added a penny". He didn't say a word, I wasn't sure at first if he heard me but he did. I had £40 and fumbled for the 1p.
He didn't say thanks or goodbye.0 -

It ain't Asians that are the problem, it's mostly those here on temporary visa. A BP petrol station local to my last workplace had a load of Bosnians who'd installed a camera above the chip/pin machine and a card skimmer behind the desk.... They'd make your card fail, then take it and pretend to clean it, next thing you know your card has been cloned.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Think about one litre of a liquid. Any liquid. A bottle of water, mebbe.
Now think about 1/130th of it. Just over 7.5ml. One teaspoon is 5ml. Imagine trying to fill a teaspoon - precisely - from a petrol pump nozzle, which is designed to deliver eighty litres - four jerry-cans - in a few minutes.
That's why it's difficult to get it penny-precise...0 -

Given that the pump measures fuel actually delivered, (never used a pump that's clearly running out, and watched both litres and price go up in fits and starts as air is pumped (feelable through the handle)?) and if the nozzle's closed, no fuel can be delivered...0 -
The new pumps have buttons for you to set exact litres or exact amount you want to fill up with. That sorts out the penny issue.
I find that the penny issue is usually directly linked with pump trigger sensitivity. It's just convenient for everyone to accuse the garages of fiddling.
Easy solution, fill up to the **.99p point or less and stop worrying about it.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
