Thiefing Petrol Station (Esso - Deptford Park)

What possible benefit would the cashier have in not giving you the fuel? If the pump registered it, then their system registered it, he has to put the money in the til, he can't keep it for himself.
If he could keep it for himself, then why would it matter to him whether you got fuel or not?
Unless the owner is in on some scam, in which case go to trading standards as suggested above.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

My guess is a faulty fuel gauge.0
-
I had similar happen , I put £40 of fuel in , went to kiosk paid my money , drove up road looked down , fuel gauge still on low !!
I pulled over , in shock , turn around to go back , but then I thought turn off ignition and retry ,
Sure enough , after I did that , the gauge shot up ,,,
Imagine how bad I would have felt demanding my £40 of fuel0 -
I had this happen to me in a ford Mondeo
I was down in Cambridge and setting off for home, called in at the first petrol station i got to and put £50.00 in jumped back in the car after paying and the gauge showed empty and the range stayed at around 50 miles, i went back in to complain but was told that there was nothing wrong with the pump after some protesting i took my receipt jumped in the car and drove the gas station a mile or so down the road
I tried to brim the tank and it took about £7.00 to fill it and cut off the pump so i new i had fuel in the tank, I drove home 200 or so miles wondering what was wrong with the fuel gauge
parked at home switched off the car and went in the house next day i came out the fuel gauge was working and the range was showing around 250 miles
it never happened again and I had never heard of it happening to anybody else until now0 -
Take the car to another fuel station and fill up, noting the volume of fuel added. Assuming you have some idea what the tank volume is this will tell you how much was in there already. This will help distinguish between a faulty fuel gauge and the pump somehow dispensing no fuel without you noticing.
My bet is a faulty fuel gauge.0 -
FWIW once when I had a Ford Explorer I managed to put about 85 litres into a 75 litre tank. I contacted trading standards and they said they test loads of pumps and they never have found a problem, is tried and tested technology.
I'd not bet a car guage against a petrol pump guage - and in 30 years of driving I've never heard or come across a faulty pump that registered and did not dispense.0 -
When I last changed a fuel guage sender unit I was amazed at how crude it was .
Just a float that moves a sliding contact against a wire wound resistor that sent a voltage to a hot wire meter in the car dash board.0 -
My guess is a faulty fuel gauge.
It may not even be faulty. On some cars the fuel gauge only measures beyond a certain point. Below that it estimates based on previous consumption. So you can fill up a certain amount and it will still not show on the dash.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
