I've been doing most of my shopping at Aldi for the last 2 years now. However my local branch is becoming a nightmare on a Saturday as it's so busy. I'm in South London so there aren't too many of them and the car park was full at opening time this morning. My dad lives up north and they're much bigger and less crowded there.
Favourite things I buy are:
Cheese topped rolls
Belgian buns
Passata
German ham
Garlic bread slices
Mozzarella
Ketchup
Mayo
Eggs
Bread flour
Raspberry juice drink
Flavoured water
Premium diet lemonade
And my most favourite is the Molton Brown liquid soap copy.
They also had a fantastic Albariño wine at the end of last year for £6 a bottle compared to £12 in Waitrose that I cleared the shelf of but they've not had it back again
If anyone ever drives over to France or Belgium I also discovered the Calais branch has reopened and is pleasant. The Belgian branches also do a very good beer! They both belong to the other part of the Aldi chain which is different to the one we get here.0 -
i have been buying at Aldi for a long time, however I was surprised to find that my fruit and veg as loads cheaper on My Supermarket at Morrisons. The Morrisons where I live is very busy so everything is fresh, think I am going to split my shopping between them for a while
I cook from scratch and eat predominantly vegetarian, OH and DS do eat meat however most of my shopping is fruit and veg0 -
A morrisons has recently opened near me - I do my main shop at Aldis and Tesco for top ups. Morrisons fruit and veg were definitely NOT cheaper than Aldi. especially comparing the Super Six. did you compare pack sizes?
I will say though that Morrisons RANGE of fruit and veg was fantastic. so was their meat and fish. I may well use them instead of Tesco in future - the fresh cod I bought from there was excellent value and tasted great.
oh and they do liver and ox tail etc.0 -
I find the pack sizes are larger, maybe six in a pack at Aldi, but the actual fruit much smaller..similar tactics used by £ stores.. on a weight comparison I find better value at Tescos, Sainburys etc.. Plus my shopping is not thrown at me at the checkout til so remains undamaged. The better chains also trust their shoppers enough to have self checkouts which saves a lot of time too.0

Hi, yes I did compare pack sizes but our Morrisons have a lot of offers not sure if they are national, 3 bags of either pears, apples and blueberries for £2 and they are the same sizes as Aldi and these are aroudn £1 each. Also broccoli was only 49p, onion were 10p cheaper for a kilo bag, carrots were however 10p cheaper at Aldi on a kg.
I will keep an eye on the prices though as I have always shopped at Aldi, I did check myself and also Lidl and Morrisons were definitely cheaper this week0 -
Morrissons are on a campaign to lower prices to equal or better that of Aldi because of the huge losses they made this year.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

that would suit me as I have to travel around 7 miles to the nearest Aldi, I can walk to Morrisons. OH prefers the Butcher Counter meat at Morrisons so will be please if I start getting some of this that is on offer0 -
did my 2nd shop yesterday.
Spent £44 and used £5 voucher from the mirror so £39, got loads of stuff,
much more than i would have done elsewhere for that money.
I bought the red teabags and I love them! very shocked by that as I am very very fussy when it comes to my tea but I am converted.
Also bought the fresh stonebaked spinach and ricotta pizza by cucina for £1.85, very nice and actually had cherry tomatoes on it as well, would have been in region of £3-£4 elsewhere.
Air freshener!! 49p?!! only 49p a tin?!! cant believe that and its very good as well!
The antibacterial kitchen cleaner 79p for 500mls, excellent and has a very clean smell. I think I like Aldi lol.
One thing I have also noticed is that the checkout girls are helpful, actually smile and are very nice.
I actually come out of there feeling unstressed.0 -
I have to disagree with the poster of #85 about self-checkouts.
The "better" chains (I assume you mean the likes of Tesco!?) that are "trusting" their customers to do their own job at the till, or even the newer `scan as you go` scheme....
Oh dear, does anyone REALLY believe this is because they trust customers?
a) these DIY tills are always well supervised from what I`ve seen, even though the staff-customer ratio means fewer staff.
b) the fewer staff they employ while the shoppers do it all themselves the lower the wages bill - AND the greater their profit. They aren`t offering you a discount for using the DIY tills, are they?0 -

Thank you!! I can't believe no one else here has ever picked up the fact self-serve is a cost-cutting measure!!!
Unless I'm in a severe hurry and only buying half a dozen items, I never use self-serve tills. Why put people out of jobs??“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0
