The better chains also trust their shoppers enough to have self checkouts which saves a lot of time too.

For 'better' read 'with a higher mark up'! eg Aldi cheap sliced meats have far less water in than Tesco or Sainsbury own brands and are more expensive - what would you like to pay for, meat or water?
Also, self service is only there to save on staff wages. It is of no benefit to customers, and is just a way of getting them to do more of the work without getting cheaper products or any other benefit. They only appear to save time because there are no longer enough staff to man the required number of tills.
Supermarkets already have customers used to the idea that they should self select, load, pack and transport their own shopping. Now they want them to sort out the payment process as well. Meanwhile the supermarket sells on the personal information gained from loyalty cards.

Aldi (and Lidl) may not have vast choice but they do have quality.

Thank you!! I can't believe no one else here has ever picked up the fact self-serve is a cost-cutting measure!!!

Unless I'm in a severe hurry and only buying half a dozen items, I never use self-serve tills. Why put people out of jobs??

Personally I would rather pack my own bags and check the totals myself as I scan rather than have my shopping thrown at me by spotty teenagers...as for putting people out of jobs ..who do you think makes, maintains, installs and monitors self checkouts...the fairies..:rotfl:

I think you'll find it's quantity not quality...Aldi senior management have often quoted their ethos as "stack 'em high sell 'em cheap"..

I have to disagree with the poster of #85 about self-checkouts.
The "better" chains (I assume you mean the likes of Tesco!?) that are "trusting" their customers to do their own job at the till, or even the newer `scan as you go` scheme....
Oh dear, does anyone REALLY believe this is because they trust customers?
    a) these DIY tills are always well supervised from what I`ve seen, even though the staff-customer ratio means fewer staff.
    b) the fewer staff they employ while the shoppers do it all themselves the lower the wages bill - AND the greater their profit. They aren`t offering you a discount for using the DIY tills, are they?

Sorry I was thinking more Waitrose, M&S etc..I wouldn't think of Tesco as a top chain..better than Aldi, Lidl etc I grant you though...

But I don't have spotty teenagers throwing my shopping at me.

In fact when I did my big shop last Thursday evening, the lovely middle aged checkout lady went off to do another task whilst I unloaded my trolley load onto the conveyor belt in a convenient order for re-packing. She came back briefly to serve a lady with just three items who I told to go ahead of me.

She even stopped the checkout when I suddenly realised I had vouchers to use (first time I've ever used them Aldi) and was quite happy to refund several items to ensure I gained full value for my three £5 off vouchers :D

I've so far found many Aldi products give Waitrose and M&S a run for their money in terms of both quality and price. Tesco don't even enter the equation as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a previous Waitrose/Co-op shopper that has defected almost 100% to Aldi since I've gained regular access to a store. I've even ditched my long term butcher who competed favourably with price/quality to mainstream supermarkets but unfortunately can't compete with Aldi on either.

Sorry to hear you are no longer using your butcher...this is the problem with cheap/huge corporate chains...they are killing the local businesses

My butcher isn't one of your run of the mill High Street butchers. He's a large wholesaler supplying both catering and private customers. My not using him as frequently (I'll still order specialised stuff I can't get from Aldi) won't affect his trading in the slightest.

Aldi s products aren't comparable to own brand though. I think a lot are on a par with brand and even finest/taste the difference etc.

That is a really good point. I will give it another go.
