I don't think Aldi is cheaper than other supermarket own-brand. I've been in Aldi's several times and thought "Oh- this is cheaper in Tesco/Asda/etc."

I've yet to find anything cheaper elsewhere. When comparing prices on My Supermarket I find I make incredible savings by shopping at Aldi. My current list for Aldi totals £140 and in Tesco that would cost £170 and in Waitrose it would be £190, so huge savings there!

I do shop around but the prices in Tesco generally make my eyes water, plus in aldi theres no ridiculous yo-yoing of prices up and down to make it look as if youve had a bargain. I bought a litre of fruit juice in Tesco at a pound, went back the next day to find it £1.20 and there was a sign crossed out to say used to be £1.50.

But if you had gone in a day earlier would have been £1.

The only thing I buy from Tesco regularly is their own brand peanut butter and anything I get on yellow stickered items. I do the rest of my shopping at home bargains, B and M and aldi.

My local aldi isn't downmarket in the slightest, in fact you'll get more issues in Tesco because my local Tesco is massive and when its crowded its a nightmare.

The last time I was in Tesco one of the cashiers said there were teens in running around and making noise, but as long as they didnt start playing up too much the management would let it go. Ive never seen anything like that in aldi in all the time Ive been shopping there.

Sometimes my local aldi does get busy and theres only 2 checkouts open but they'll open a third one. Theres been an aldi in my home town for almost 20 years and people did used to look down on those who shopped at aldi and lidl, but these days so many people are struggling its no big deal.

Aldi s products aren't comparable to own brand though. I think a lot are on a par with brand and even finest/taste the difference etc.

    I've been Money Tipped!

Well I went to aldi yesterday and I was quite happy with the amount of things I was able to buy! The meats especially I thought were really good value, although I've yet to eat anything of it, but as it stands!
I spent £74 but got quite a lot of meat in this( a LARGE chicken, three meals worth of both mince and chicken breast, two packs of bacon, a pretty big gammon joint two sirloin steaks and sandwich-y meats, meatballs and german and spanish selection packs) my fridge and cupboards are, for the first time in a long time, quite full!

There was a few things that I decided to go for morrisons (we was going there for dinner anyhow) though, the chocolate mousses were 79p for six in aldi, but only 27p in Morrisons, the butternut squashes were 89p but quite small in morrisons there much bigger and a little more expensive at £1. Chorizo was £1.69 but quite small, morrisons £2.39 but twice the size. There was a few more things but I can't remember right now.
I did find the lettuce to be quite scabby looking too, so got that from morrisons too.
But other than this I was impressed. I'm going to write down the things I would buy again so I can stock up next month when I next go.
Also they didn't have any nappies in the size I needed, so it will be asda for them.

We found no problems with the parking and the store seemed clean and organised. I only spoke to one sales assistant on the till and he seemed pleasant enough.

So yes, overall I was happy with it!
    Thanks again for everyone's replies.

Aldi does have its own everyday essentials brand, I think thats what its called, but theres not tons of products in the range.

I dont think its possible to compare like for like between Tesco and Aldi/Asda.

Im sure there are certain products that you can get cheaper in Tesco and Asda, but for a weekly shop if I only had the choice between Aldi and Tesco or Aldi and Asda, Id go to Aldi everytime.
  • I have just done Bratwurst sarnies and DH is in heaven :drool:HM crusty bread with a pack of Bratwurst . I made 2 rounds of sarnies each so that was a total of £1.79 for lunch for the three of us approx 60p each :D

I go in the evenings after work, Friday is a good evening to go. In and out in no time.

I spend between £30-45 a week depending on what we need. I make meat last for two meals instead of one and bulk meals out with veg or new potatoes or peas or salad.

Lunch I take their malted bread (absolutely love it) with breaded ham and a slick of mustard. Aldi crisps and aldi yogurt which is nicer than the fruit corners!
