I note that you haven't responded to about what half of what I have written.

Your arrogance is utterly astounding. The media coverage this had pales in insignificance compared to the recession, quantitative easing, unemployment, interest rates, the 50p tax rate, wide sweeping budget cuts and so on. To claim otherwise is a total joke.

Let's look at your logic here - because I didn't know about having to register for self-assessment, I can't know about any current affairs? Despite that, several times, I have said I read many online news
    sources.
    .

And, through all this, you didn't pick up so much as a whisper about the CB changes?

That is astonishing, but at least you won't have to pay a fine.

    Lin :)
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

but as we are told that statistics tell the full story

Either you actually believe this, which means you are not very clever, or what you posted was pointless, which means you are not very clever. Which is it?

You know that this forum is about saving money? And there are plenty of threads about minimising tax fines, car parking tickets, speeding fines, penalties for exiting contracts, right?

What point are you trying to make? What's wrong with trying to minimise the penalty? I would be an idiot to not do this.

I was warned by several people that this thread would largely involve me being told how stupid I was for not knowing about it.

I should have heeded those warnings.

If only they had warned you about the change to child benefit
  • OP you may as well give up now, as soon as the troll word is mentioned you just know the mob mentality will take over.

I find it refreshing you have posted a few home truths though.

Good luck with the problem you initially posted about :D

Thanks. It's unfortunate this forum is like this (well, very specifically it seems bad in the "Work & Benefits" section), it could be useful. I guess it happens when a certain number of users is reached.
  • My understanding reading this was that the OP knew there was a change to the child benefit rules but didn't realise they had to register for SA for it to be dealt with based on post #23[/QUOTE

There is a clue in the thread title.

The OP has changed his / her stance along the way and I assume that is because he / she has gained a bit of understanding of the subject.

I'm not sure what the change of stance is. The High Income Child Benefit Charge is the tax mechanism used to reclaim the child benefit. As far as I know, this wasn't named, or decided, on the day of the budget. On the day of the budget, the news was about how child benefit was going to be taken away from high earners, not about this.

I knew there were changes to child benefit, but not that I had to register for self-assessment.

This has always been my stance.
