Contact HMRC ask how much you need to pay back.........end of !

Then you can use your time to do the things you enjoy doing.
  • There are appeal and complaint procedures for pretty much all HMRC procedures. But before you go down that route you need to establish what happened in your case.

The first step will be to call them.

There is detailed information here on the charge, what you need to do, complaints and appeals etc

I don't personally claim child benefit but my understanding is that the claim form asks for your partners details. Either way HMRC to have the ability to search for anyone living at your address.

Thanks. Honestly - I don't recall much about those forms outside of being advised that regardless of earnings you should claim (to me, it seems odd that anyone on high earnings could claim).

    I'm calling them today.

It's interesting how your only angle on this is "How could you not have known about it?". As you can see, I am a new user to this forum. I don't read any forums that regard tax because, up until now, if my circumstances haven't changed, everything has been automatically handled as part of PAYE. I prefer to spend my time doing other things.

    You mentioned forums,not me.
Do you not pay attention to the budget?
As I said,I have had conversations about this many times eg the unfairness on single parent families earning greater than 50K
You prefer doing other things but these dont include paying attention to things like the budget, human interaction etc?

    Thanks.

Do you have any further information about that? I have read a Telegraph article that mentioned the fines being different for the High Income Child Benefit Charge as it seems they didn't inform quite a lot of people.

Currently I'm struggling to see how they would have known to write to me as our finances aren't linked. At the same time I assumed that as my salary hasn't changed, or our circumstances, that nothing would change with child benefit or tax.

You don't need to be financially linked for them to contact you. My sister shares a house with her friend, the friend has a son for whom she recevies CB and my sister recevied a letter as she earns over 50K. They identified the potential issue on the same address.

A little confused...you say at the beginning you haven't recieved any letters etc but it now seems like you did recieve the forms/letters. Therefore you don't have any recourse to appeal or a valid complaint. Hope you phone call has helped clear the matter up for you.

I think the OP is referring to my comment about the child benefit claim form asking for partners details. The OP stated they were unsure how HMRC would know the partners details.

She seems to be speaking about forms she recieved at one time. 'She doesn't recall much about the forms except for claiming regardless of earnings'.

    Who knows!:)

That doesn't really answer the question though (in response to poppasmurf_bewdley).

I don't watch live TV. I get all of my new online, so I don't read papers. I don't read the tax sections of forums because, up until now, I have had to do nothing around tax as it is handled under PAYE. I haven't received anything from HMRC - I'm not actually sure how they would know to write to me really as I doubt there is any link between me and my partner as far as they are concerned.

So, the question still stands, what options do I have here?

The Revenue take the view that 'ignorance is no defence' so I think you will probably have to play by their rules.

If you are getting CB, you should have got a letter.

You will need to pay their fine, and then fill out their forms.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

And? I don't read any section of any forums to do with tax. I don't read any forums with any aspect of tax or parenting or benefits. Posting things about it would be regarded off topic.
Do you not pay attention to the budget?

Some attention, yes. But I don't recall any discussion on the day of having to self-assess tax - just that child benefit would be reduced for high income earners.

I like the way that, because I haven't discussed child benefits or tax with anyone, you somehow think I'm a lesser person. But then I don't spend my time berating people on internet forums, so I'm quite unlikely to understand why you would do that.

As I said, I haven't received any correspondence from the HMRC about this. We did fill in the child benefit forms to claim child benefit. There's no confusion.

Not everyone has received a letter, in fact most I know haven't received one.
