I live in Australia and do not receive child benefit but even I was aware- just reading news on line there has been enough awareness!0

I think it's odd you would put something in quote marks that isn't a quote. I didn't say that. I'm not a she. Yes, the meaning is very similar, but why quote it like that?
Right would you like me to apologise for the unwanted or unwarranted quotation marks or for actually repeating what you had posted, albet in a slightly different way....you seem a little hung up on it!
I was orignally replying to another poster and not to yourself( it is allowed)..anyway i out of here because this thread is in danger of becoming another Not what the OP wants to hear thread.0 -

At the end of the day, OP you now know. I would suggest that if claiming any benefits in future, you have read at the budget every year to see how they affect you. That way you won't get caught out again.
No one is poking holes in this post.... people are truly incredulous that the op and his partner didn't know about one of the most wildly reported and debated changes of recent times...there is no advice to give as ignorance is no defence here and no way to avoid a penalty.0 -

I'm not hung up on it. I just don't understand why someone would use quote marks for something that isn't a quote. It seems disingenuous, but then, as I have said, I don't understand the psychology of people who, rather than give advice, wish to berate.I was orignally replying to another poster and not to yourself( it is allowed)..anyway i out of here because this thread is in danger of becoming another Not what the OP wants to hear thread.
And I was replying to you. If you didn't want it to be seen, then I'd suggest that replying on a forum isn't the best place for it.
I asked what my options were when dealing with this situation. I didn't ask to be told how I could have heard about this two years ago, because that time has passed. So, yes, that isn't what I wanted to hear. You are the one that made it into a thread like that, not me.0 -

Some attention, yes. But I don't recall any discussion on the day of having to self-assess tax - just that child benefit would be reduced for high income earners.
I like the way that, because I haven't discussed child benefits or tax with anyone, you somehow think I'm a lesser person. But then I don't spend my time berating people on internet forums, so I'm quite unlikely to understand why you would do that.
It never ceases to amaze me just how many people live in their own little bubble; never interacting with what goes on in the world around them. As they never read a paper nor watch a party political broadcast, it is logical to conclude that neither do they vote. And yet they are both in the higher tax bracket?
OP: as you have chosen not to keep up to date with current affairs, you just have to pay the price without trying to find ways out of it - without trying to wriggle out of it.0 -

I'll let you into a secret - it seems a lot of people don't know. Generally, if you use PAYE and your circumstances haven't changed, then you don't need to do anything with regards to tax. It all just happens.
One other person has posted on this thread saying they didn't know. I have also had a PM from another person saying they don't know (and who didn't want to post in this thread because they didn't want to be berated). A work colleague also didn't know.
And after speaking to the HMRC yesterday:
* They didn't send any correspondence to me.
* They aren't fining people for missing the deadline for High Income Child Benefit Charge.
So, yes, it is a way to avoid a penalty.
And yes, there could have been some advice. Someone might have come on saying "This happened to me, I got fined £2k, but managed to appeal it", or "Speak to a tax accountant, they can help you avoid the fine", or "If you offer to pay back the full amount immediately as a lump sum, there is no fine".0 -

No, I don't read any papers. They are dying, full of stories about celebrities, sport, and fake science. I read many online news sources, choosing what I read so it is relevant to me, from a wide variety of sources. There is no bubble.
Not quite sure how you got to not watching party political broadcasts. I don't watch live TV, this doesn't preclude that. I've voted at every opportunity.
Keep on judging though, it's in keeping with this thread. And yet they are both in the higher tax bracket?
Both? Who is the other person in the higher tax bracket? Or is this more stuff that isn't actually true, but fits in with your view, so you might as well write it down?
Can you explain why not realising that you had to register for self-assessment raises questions around my earnings?OP: as you have chosen not to keep up to date with current affairs, you just have to pay the price without trying to find ways out of it - without trying to wriggle out of it.
Again, I didn't know I had to register for self-assessment. I've gone and looked at a number of budget 2012 stories that mention child benefit, but nothing about doing this by claiming tax back after going through self-assessment.
So, the assertion that I don't keep up with current affairs is false, as is the one about me trying to wriggle out of it. Nice.0 -
It's quite interesting looking at the post history of Poppie68, poppasmurf_bewdley and thorsoak. So many instances of berating and belittling people because they don't know something they do know.
I'd love to know what drives a person to spend their days on a forum doing this.0 -

Well, speaking only for myself; I'm retired so have plenty of time to spend on the forum. As for berating and belittling you, I asked you a question. I asked where you've been for the last 18 months. That's not berating or belittling. If you see it as such, then that's in your own mind.
I still can't believe you haven't heard about the new Child Benefit rules. I think that if the truth be told, you have heard but you didn't want to hear. In one ear and out of the other. You seem to be proud of your ignorance, and you keep spouting of how you are keeping up with being ignorant.
You are the one who will suffer from your ignorance. No one else."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0
