Everyone will tell you to get whatever they have, which is not really much use to yourself.
Going by what you say you are going to use it for, any basic android will do, the Motorola G punches well above it's weight and will do what you want well. Or, go Windows phone, something like a Nokia 625, again, within your budget and will do what you want well.
You don't want to do much on it, so no need to spend too much.

Consider paying monthly. Total cost over 2-years is OK.

    I have the Lumia 620.
I use Nokia Drive+ as my only satnav. Plan a route on the PC using Here Maps, save to favorites then the phone syncs with the update.
Hotmail is in sync with Outlook on my PC.
Add a calendar entry to PC and it syncs with Phone and vice-versa.
My land line broadband is down at this moment. I am using my 620 as a wireless access to the internet.
I believe CPW do not lock phones to a network, but check.

    Thanks, that's helpful :)
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end
