My HTC One V was playing up, even after factory reset, anyway, I too decided to get a new phone. After speaking with my SIL who is in the mobile phone business, he advised a Nokia Lumia 925 for my needs. (I'm not much into apps either). He rates the Windows phones highly compared to android, which I was quite surprised at.
I'm waiting for it to be brought out to me in Cyprus in a few weeks, so can't give you any practical experience at the moment, but if you are not in any rush, can do when I have my hands on it.
Thanks, that would be very helpful :)

The Nokia Lumia 920 is an excellent phone, it was available for £152 from Tesco Direct using voucher code TDX-KH4C. Although, it states it is locked to Tesco my one came unlocked. Otherwise, go for the Motorola Moto G available from O2 for £100 and can be unlocked easily for a couple of pounds.

Could you tell me how this is done please? (I'm not phone techy:o)

Apparently that code at Tesco has now expired. May be other Tesco codes lurking about.

OP, people on HotUKDeals have been reporting that they have bought the 920 Tesco Mobile, and found it unlocked to any network.

Knowing my luck I'd be the one person to recieve one that WAS locked :D

Conversely, also saw this people bought 'unlocked' Nokia Lumia 920s from Phones4U last year and then found that they were, in fact, locked to EE, Orange and T-mobile!

There seems to be some bias against Windows Mobile in some of the replies you've had.

I hope this is a balanced response. I find that more often than not people like to justify their own choice as much as anything when giving advice. It's a rare thing for someone to say I bought X and it was a terrible mistake.

First off my own mobile is a Samsung Galaxy S4, Android, that I am very happy with.

I also have a cheap Windows Mobile, an HTC Radar, I doubt they are making them any more and I have no idea whet the current replacement is called. Mine cost £99 including a £10 top-up from Vodafone. I had to buy the PAYG SIM as part of the deal, I never used it, I just put my work SIM in the phone.

I got it because my work Blackberry died whilst I was in London for a few days and needed an instant replacement. It turned out to be a superb phone, so good that I questioned why I'd spent so much on the Samsung!

Windows mobile is very easy to use, fantastic for email and all the other included apps. Battery life is great and I still use it to this day for trips abroad or when I'm out in the wilds or on the boat, better the cheap HTC gets lost/damaged than the Samsung.

Although I bought it as a PAYG on Voda the phone was actually unlocked. If you go somewhere like phones4U the chances are that most PAYG handsets will be unlocked, it makes life easier for the shop.

I've also used the top of the range Nokia Windows phone. I did some Techie road shows with the big IT companies and Microsoft were there and their rep gave everyone doing the shows a top range Nokia for the duration of the tour.

If the cheaper Nokia is anything like the expensive one then it will be a fantastic phone. I didn't really want to give it back but I'd not long bought the Samsung.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

I think Windows Phone does a lot of things extremely well, performance is very smooth, consistent and fluid and it very seamlessly and cleverly combines data from all different sources together (facebook, google, twitter etc.). The camera on the 920 is superb and the mapping application works well as you can download all the map data to the phone rather than rely on streaming the map data as you need to do with some other solutions which can be a problem if your data connection isn't good enough.

My main problem with Windows Phone is that you have to do it Microsoft's way or not at all, you can't customise it that much. On the whole that's not an issue as it's well designed in general but there's some parts I don't like, particularly the keyboard which you can't change. It very much errs on the side of caution so it does very little correction even for fairly obvious typos which I just find very frustrating as I have to type very slowly, for me that would be a deal breaker for choosing the 920 as a phone for e-mail.

On Android you can choose the keyboard you want so I use one called Swiftkey which does a very good job trying to learn what I type so it can more accurately predict what I am typing which is essential on touch keyboards where there is no physical separate between the keys and no button presses either.

I bought a Nokia 925 as a compact alternative to my much larger Android phone (Sony Z Ultra) but I rarely use the 925 as the keyboard is just such a pain in the neck and it's obviously a very big part of using a smartphone.

It's a personal choice though so if you're unsure I'd recommend going into a shop with a lot of demo models out (CPW are good for that here) and try out some handsets to see what you like.

The Lumia 920 is a cracking phone.

The Moto G is a cracking phone.

Both are available at stupidly good prices, and both have screens easily big enough to make emailing simple.

Pop into a phone shop and have a play with both to see what you feel most comfortable with.

The main reason why I'd sway to the Moto G is because there are simply more email apps for Android than Windows, so if you like things 'just so' there's more chance of getting exactly what you want.

But you can't go far wrong with either.
