  • If you are so worried about it that you are contemplating suicide, then you need to get it sorted out on Monday. Take a day's leave from your job if necessary. You don't want it hanging over you any longer.

The cut off varies from council to council. I was told they MAY decide to prosecute. When I looked into it jail is an option but from round hear it has only been used on large amounts I.e. Over Thirty grand.

I know your panic ridden, stop, breathe. S*** happens. Things in life test us and make us stronger. Please get some rest, you will make yourself ill.

It is in my husband's name in the original claim, his bank as the rent comes out of his salary, he is the main earner and my income is there in the claiming too. It is not full HB.

My husband leaves payslips, P60s at work, then he takes back puts in random drawers, don't open anything, don't deal with anything, any paperwork, nothing.
I have been trying to be on top of everything on my own, I used to nag and nag him for payslips when we were receiving Tax Credits etc, it was a nightmare.
I work in the afternoons, there is no way I can take time on Monday, maybe later on in the week. I won't be able to see CAB and HB office in one morning, so I will just call them on Monday and book an appointment.

If the claim is in your husband's name I can't see how you are being made to attend, or is there more to come out. Lack of information leads to guessing and not help.

I am guessing there are other benefits that haven't been updated too - tax credits, children's tax credits, council tax benefit ??

It could come to quite an amount over the 3 years :/ x

  • I'm surprised the OP was been entitled to HB and CT benefit when they were/are both in work.

Anyway, as others have said, it's unlikely you'll go to prison by "coming clean". However, be prepared to disclose absolutely everything about your finances and have the evidence to back it up. Be aware also that investigations might already have started, particularly as there is a benefit fraud hotline/website that people can use to report suspicions. I'm afraid that ignorance or having a disorganised husband is not accepted as an excuse in fraud cases, particularly when you invariably will have signed an agreement that requires you to notify the council of any changes to your circumstances.

I can't help but think it's a bit sneaky that you only want to come clean now, just because you're after a job with the council. The council's HR department is not going to know about your dealings with the benefits team unless you tell them. However, depending on the job you are going for, if you're offered it you may have to undergo a criminal records check.

It is, imo, most unlikely that you will go to prison, but I do not think that you are a suitable person to work for the Council, you seem to have a cavalier attitude towards other peoples' money.

Yes, make a clean breast of it, if you try to cover it up and get caught the results could be catastrophic.

I had experience of being married to a man who was incredibly casual in his dealings with money. Although he was a good man in many respects he was just sooooo casual about money, you wouldn't believe. And the problems this attitude led us into.

Get down to your council offices first thing Monday morning. Go there. Explain. Tell them. They're not ogres, they won't apply the thumbscrews. But be up-front about it - tell them!

Many councils offer debt management advice/courses and if this is suggested to you, take it. And let's have no more silly talk about killing yourself. That's no use to anybody, least of all your innocent children. Very few things in life are so bad that they can't be sorted.

My husband left me to do everything re: administration of the house. He has no idea how much exactly he earns as he never open payslips, letters, bank statements anything.
He doesn't know how much anything costs, he has an idea on rent, he usually gets the answer wrong by £50, but he haven't got a clue how much is CT, Electricity, Water, nothing. And the majority of the direct debits come from his acc.

For a long time I organised all the papers, tried to involve him, let him know what is going on, be practical. He refuses.
