I know they do have diesel bikes but ive never seen one.
the older bikes are the best, still loads of live in them for little money. having said that when there done up they have cost way more than there ever worth, well in the future they may, but as for the gpz600 they churned millions out, but the gpx 750 was only a 3 year run and getting scarce now in good order. the cbr 1000 is the same its the first run model and parts are getting scarce.0 -

Like old too as they're cheap, not a restorer though. Used to like to think I would be, I just don't have the dedication for it.0 -
You're making me feel guilty now. I like to keep older bikes going as well.
I have a 1994 Yamaha XT600E which was my daily driver until last year. I've alway had an idea to give it some restoration and TLC, but last year it needed chain & sprox, tyres and pads all at once, and an XT660R came up at the right price, so I semi-retired it. It's currently under a cover behind the shed waiting for me to get round to sorting it. I'm planning on a full stripdown, powder coat the frame, overhaul the engine, new seals and bearings and give it a nice new paint job. But then I got a 1992 Triumph Trident 750 on a whim, and that is taking up all my spare time. I get a feeling that the 600E is being pushed to the back of the queue.
Selling the XT would be like kicking a puppy, and I would get nothing for it, but I don't actually need three bikes (don't tell the Mrs, though). So behind the shed it will stay until I get either money or time to deal with it.

This thread has brought back memories. I sold my last bike in 1990 (I had restored my GPz 550 Unitrak - finished it in Eddie Lawson colours, with rear sets and clip ons), but have always fancied getting another one.
Bikes, unlike cars, are quite simple to work on, at least they were in the old days, and "bang for bucks" there is nothing which can match them for performance and excitement.
I always fancied getting a Ducati or Laverda.0 -

it takes a lot of time and patience to see the projects through, and have thought when doing some of mine (done 7 now) its no wonder they sometimes get abandoned, not forgetting the money that needs to be put in, depending on what spec is required.
mine are by no means back to original paint but the mechanical parts are, as close as i can get, without throwing money at it for the sake of being pedantic.
the cbr1000f/h 1988 sc21 (the first ones made, jelly mold fairings). i bought rode like a pig when i bought it and rode it home, it had had 4 owners in the prior 6 months, it needed
tyres
chain and sprockets
front discs and pads
full service
all new fluids.
paid £250 for bike, and then £650 for the new bits, and buy the following week it was done. but the previous 4 owners where hoping for a bargain and didnt have the thought to get it sorted, it makes a differance if you can do the work yourself.
runs smooth as a rolls royce now (just likr the new ones that where on tv last night).:rotfl:
ill give you nothing for the xt600, just charge you my petrol money.:rotfl: as you say they get forgoten somtimes when just covered up. my cx500 was to be the next project but i just bought a gpz750 and think thats more practical for me.
i was going to do the bike restoration for a job but theres no money in doing them to sell as the buyer cant see the value, its only a owner with deepish pockets that whants his pride and joy bringing back to a head turning standard, and the gpz600 does everytime i go out on it.
when i do the gpz750 ill photograph every part of the restoration and post up its progress daily. ill start a new one with the cbr1000 and gpx750 that have been done. so keep a look out for them, ill try and do them today or at least start the threads

I had the GPX600R which has the same engine. I managed to drop a 10mm socket down the cam chain tunnel whilst doing the tappetts - it caught on the oil crossover pipes. Eventually, after two hours of swearing and trying different methods, I managed to hook it out with a bent coat hanger.
Very underrated bike, really quick and handles superbly (with the right tyres).0 -

iv thought when doing mine how many have done that, did have a bit of a scare when replacing the cam chain., but got it with a magnet on a stick:rotfl:.
ive perelli sport demons on it, drops in just nice, very flickable.0 -
before the engine was put in the frame, it was partially stripped down. it was burning a bit of oil and noisy cam chain. so of with the head and sent away for the skim and valve job, while I replaced the piston rings, and the cam chain, which came as a endless chain, rather than strip the crank out I cut and jointed the chain. rebuilt and set the rockers, coat of black matt heat resistant paint. it also had a new bearing in the clutch, and new plates (had to make special tools) and replaced the alternator windings.
in the pic it also has the centre stand and head stock fitted.
