It'll be interesting to see Audi's take on this.

I'm pretty well up on the BMW service situation.

If you buy a brand new BMW you can opt for a 5 year service deal - but it has a limit of 50K - so that's not good at all.

High mileage-eating BMWs need servicing at around every 18K

The OP has bought a used Audi (not very used admittedly) but do Audi not do a service deal for used cars?

BMW do and it costs £410 for 2 years or 120K miles.

To have a service pack including brake-discs and pads costs £1010 for the 2 years.

I wouldn't go for the higher priced deal as a car doing that kind of mileage is not going to be so hard on brakes as many folks think.

I don't know of any special tyre deals for private motorists. When I was responsible for the needs of a mixed fleet of 6 vehicles we had a deal with ATS which gave 20% off - but was still dearer than what you could get on a one-off basis with Camskill for example.

I think the OP will very rapidly realize that the world of lease cars is very different from owning your own car and paying everything your self.

Audi won't do a service plan with that amount of miles being done. Not even on a year. Will have a look at camskill when online later though :)

I certainly hope I don't need brakes as much or anything else. As you say it is very different when it is your own car and all the costs have to be paid by me.

thats a lot of mile. how much of that is the new car honeymoon?

When i got my first car I'd use any excuse to go out for a drive. "oh no milk in the fridge, lets drive to tescos to get a litre"

None..Haha. on the weekend I dint like to drive as I have driven so much in the week. I have local shops bars and restaurants all around the area of the city where I am.

I will probably stay away a couple of days a month to after I settle in to this new role but my honest lowest mileage will be about 50k

The Audi is a bad idea as far as warranty goes.

Unlimited miles for first two years and then reverts to 60k limit for third year.

I had quotes for service plans before and they are little different to the actual cost of the service.

You will need 3 maybe 4 services a year.

Probably one set of tyres if you rotate every 10k, i don't think your car has different tyre sizes front to back.

You can also save substantial amounts by getting brakes done outside the Audi network using quality parts from Euro or similar. Pagid are OE spec for example.

You should be able to find a good VW specialist to do the brake work.

I would suspect your vehicles resale value will be improved with a full Audi history as far as servicing goes.

I wouldn't expect who did the brake work will make any difference. It certainly didn't when i bought my XJ.

But without a full main dealer service history from Jaguar i wouldn't have bothered.

Tbh I am not sure what I would get for a car that has done 200_250k even if with full service history ?? I wasn't really thinking of 're sale and more what I could getout of it (4years) then give it to my partner ( although then I still need to pay..) or sell it on in great condition and all serviced regular by Audi for next to nothing..

I wouldn't mind maybe going to a German car specialist garage vag to get work done if it is quite a difference in price. With maybe a service per year at Audi central? If they had been able to offer a deal I would have gone for everything with them but it will be too expensive I feel for the privilege of have the dealership stamp in the book 3 _4 times per year.

As I have said above though..this is the first car I have have bought and usually just go where I have been told by lease company so I am looking to dodge the pitfalls and why I have posted on here for the wealth of knowledge some of you guys have

well the prices i got from my local audi showroom for service are the first (oil change) £196

2nd oil and pollen filter £296

3rd oil, pollen filter and air filter £349 (roughly cant remember exactly)..

so if i am gonna hit 2 - 3 services per year plus say two sets of tyres (£500 ea?)at least (other people are saying every 10,000 miles) plus say a set of brakes or two per annum too...

    god knows..is gonna be expensive

Crikey, that sounds extortionate ! Almost £200 for an oil and filter change ???? Top quality fully synthetic oil is no more than about £50 from Halfords ( who are not exactly renowned for being cheap, even better would be a local motor factor ), a filter .... I don't know, £20 max, being generous. It's a 10 minute job even for a novice DIY-er. OK, let me qualify that - on most cars it's a very easy job, I do know that some newer "posh" cars can be trickier. But even so that does sound ridiculous.

Have a look for a good local independant garage. As long as he fits OEM parts and is vat-registered, then this won't affect your warranty.

The problem is that you are going to hit the mileage limits on the warranty fairly early on and if you then have a problem you are more likely to get a goodwill gesture from the manufacturer if the servicing has been carried out at a main stealer. A ring round VAG group dealers might be worthwhile to try and get a decent service price from them bearing in mind you are going to be spending a lot of money over a relatively short time.

My thinking on who to use for tyres is that if you need a tyre at short notice you will probably need it immediately and could be a long way from home. In those circumstances using a national company and easily sourced tyres is probably more important than saving a couple of quid a corner.

A service is not just an oil and filter change. I'm not defending stealer prices but you can't compare a 'fred in the shed' oil change with a proper service.

No, I know a service is more than just oil & filter. But OP quoted a price of £196 for an oil change from the dealer :

"well the prices i got from my local audi showroom for service are the first (oil change) £196"

I'm not in any way disagreeing with you, just saying that if that's what they're charging for an oil change, it seems to be massively over priced. Even allowing for the fact that Audis are "expensive", and the hourly rates charged by a main dealer are steep, that still seems excessive to me.

If you travel around the country you can have the service carried out anywhere at all at any Audi dealer who has a 'slack day' in their schedule, and want to keep the mechanics (sorry technician's) busy.

With mostly motorway running brakes should last 50K - mine do.

But if you are paying the bills you quickly learn to ease off on all the pedals. LOL

Yes, it is. But is a service plan going to be any cheaper? All it'll do is spread the cost (plus a bit for profit/admin). You'll still require the same amount of workshop time and the same number of parts paying for... So the question is merely one of whether the "service plan" will reduce the labour rate and increase the parts discount sufficiently to offset that profit and admin cost.

£54 quid for an air filter!
