I've just double checked their price list and it says the following:
Calls to standard UK landlines, UK mobiles (any network) and your Three voicemail once you’ve
    used your allowance - 35p

I think their CS rep might have been fibbing to sell me a different tarrif. Another call tomorrow I think. Useful tip on the free voicemail though, it brings the increased cost down to around £5 - £7 per month.

I spoke to a different rep today who was adamant voicemail will not come out of your allowance regardless of what is says in their price guide, however I could transfer to an equivalent tariff for £30 p/m. Call forwarding/diverts are charged, they do not come out of the allowance. I haven't checked, but presumably if I could forward them to an 0800 number that would be free.

As some people have noticed when getting iOS 7.1, Three now has a different APN for tethering, calling it a 'personal hotspot' and I'm told it will use the same device detection as used when roaming, so the network will know as soon as you're tethering.

This means no way to get around it, or no easy way at least

    Not true x2

    1. It is not related to iOS 7.1, it was like that always, since tethering was added to iOS years ago, even before Wifi Hotspot (there was option to tether on USB)

    2. yes, there is easy way, it is called TetherMe. The only problem is - jailbreak is required. So, it is true partially. As there is no jailbreak for iOS 7.1 - there is no easy way if you updated your device to 7.1

Don't put words in my mouth, if you quote a quote you should make it clear.

The person you quoted (Jon Morris) is a tech journalist who has direct access to Three, I would expect his detail to be quite accurate. Perhaps navigate to his blog in the link and argue with him there?
