My mum had several of these calls last year, and on the last one she sat through their spiel and played along for about 10 minutes whilst they instructed her with what to do on the computer to get rid of the 'virus', telling her that they could see her computer screen and she was doing all the right things. Then at the end of the call before they took any details she told them that they'd wasted their time and she knew they were trying to scam her because her computer wasn't even on. They haven't rung back since0

A lady at work had a phone call from her husband last night saying that his PC had been locked down by Microsoft and he had paid them money with his debit card to unlock it.!!!
Everyone at work was in a state of utter disbelief and shock :eek:0 -
I love it when people tell me my PC is infected, and I reply with "but I have a mac" strange how quickly they put the phone down!

We have an ongoing competition in our house to see how long we can spin them along before they hang up.
Seriously though it must work some of the time or they wouldn't still be doing it.Rational judgement, now, at this very moment.

My best is 18 minutes, having been passed on to one of their managers, who actually congratulated me (grudgingly) on keeping them occupied for so long. It included highlights such as a (theoretical) re-boot that took 5 minutes "it must be all the errors you're telling me about", getting him to spell everything out twice or more times and nearly 3 minutes for "I've just got to go and turn the oven down". I entered dozens of comps whilst he rattled on!0 -
I'm sure you all know, but if you get a call from a number you don't know, go to whocallsme.com and check it. Most of the time you're not alone!0
