the 'man with the van' and the person that hired him are both to blame for fly-tipping

I hardly think a licensed waste contractor is going to risk fly tipping.
I am looking at another skip company now - £45 for a 1 ton bag lift.

Since when did good value equate to "must be illegal" then?

It can't possibly have been done legally for that price.

You have a duty to ensure that anyone who takes your rubbish away (apart from the local council or their agent) is a Licensed Waste Carrier who will dispose of it lawfully. If you fail to do this, you are as guilty as they are and could be prosecuted. You should always check the public register at http://epr.environment-agency.gov.uk/ePRInternet/SearchRegisters.aspx to ensure that your "man with a van" is licensed.

Thanks for your concern, I know the rules. And yes they are licensed, as am I.

In the waste industry, if someone is offering to collect and dispose of waste at a price which is lower than the cost of lawful disposal, then the likelihood is that it is being disposed of illegally. Either flytipped, or a backhander to someone at the Council tip.

So if you are a licensed waste carrier, perhaps you could say where you take your waste and how much you pay for disposal?

(And if you are a licensed carrier, it seems odd that you should hire someone to carry your household waste!)

One of my friends bought a small 2 bed starter home. She was pregnant and money was tight. Just before exchange the solicitor asked them if they wanted to buy some of the furniture- bed, sofa table etc. the price was so low that they couldnt say no. The seller said they might also leave a few other items and they said fine. day of moving in they got into the house and except for clothes and toiletries absolutely everything else had been left. Cleaning products, cutlery, plates.

In the under stairs cupboard were unopened wedding presents. They later found out from neighbours that the previous owners had never actually lived in the house. They bought it for when they married and spent abut 4 months decorating it and getting the stuff but they argued on the honeymoon and never moved in.

It was amazing for them- they didnt buy a single thing. Not everything left is rubbish.

Sounds like you are paying far too much for waste disposal.

OK. That's 1 cubic metre of waste by volume, or slightly smaller than a Eurobin. Filled with general household waste, its likely to weigh about 270 Kg.

The link is to a service charging around £125 a tonne, which is more realistic that the £45 suggested.
