Scary air conditioning moment. Driving through death valley, california there is a sign that says to turn air conditioning off to protect engine from over heating. Outside temperature 114 C, car engines just can't cope.

    114F or 114C? There's quite a difference.

We get to 114f here, albeit very rarely in Sydney. Some places inland like Broken Hill will reach that temperature several days each summer.

We'd expect to use air con in the car on a day like that. My guess is that Aussie cars are designed for that whereas American cars have to cope with everything from tropical to Arctic weather.

One adult has to. So OH is doing that, while my mother and I look after Kermie and set up the tea in a room nearby.

Cakes are sorted - my mother does them. She is absolutely amazing at it, and does proper wedding cakes too. We helped her make one at Easter, that took 11lb of fruit and cooked for nearly 12 hours (the bottom tier). That wedding was last weekend:

Last year, she did Isaac a Battle of Hastings birthday cake, complete with icing Bayeux Tapestry on the sides:

Two years ago it was a pirate tropical island:

This year the theme is Romans, but I've not seen the cake yet.

    B 12 - eat more marmite?

Pint or two of real ale?

Your mum has a genuine talent IMO. I can make food taste good but I struggle to make it look good.

There is also the insurance factor. If you have a knock in the others car that needs declaring on your insurance (as in the main driver had an accident in another car) and on their car insurance (please repair my car that someone else has caused to be damaged). If you have a knock in your own car you declare it on your insurance and the effect on the other's insurance should be minimal (named driver had a knock in different car).
In January DH wrote off his car driving into a puddle. When I declared that at my insurance renewal they increased my premium by 25%. He is a named driver on my car. I said I wasn't paying that and they reduced it randomly, still nearly 15% loading. Not what I call minimal!

I have car aircon on all year round. Hate being too hot.

Hmm - in the circumstances perhaps you should have reconsidered having him on your insurance at all....
    I think....

OK- now Ingerland have been officially knocked out all my hopes of glory rest on the mighty Equador (work sweepstake). C'mon Equador. You just need to get to the last four...

Or, have a look at this flowchart for a Plan B if you're not in a sweepstake (it's hugely stereotypical but quite amusing in places).

She does - she is a fantastic cook, and can also make it look great. She thinks anyone could do it, though, she tends to undervalue her own talents and think anyone could do anything she can do.

She's also a wonderful host; she makes visitors feel genuinely welcome, relaxed and at home, which is a definite talent, and one I don't think I have. It's one I imagine both LIR and Spirit do, though, they remind me of my mother in that way.

Car air-conditioning: will cost 250 plus vat to fix, we may just get used to arriving everywhere looking hot and uncomfortable. Not so bad for me as I rarely drive anywhere far and normally before 9 and after 6, not so good for DW and the kids. We do have a trip on Sunday when no doubt if it is hot and the M25 is stationary we will be reconsidering.

Mine cost £450 last year for a whole new pump which was reconditioned (the new one was ridiculously expensive for the value of the car). Not happy as it now needs regassing and only had it done late Summer '13. I have climate control rather than A/C though.

I may be biased, but in terms of kits I think the Equadorian one is by far the best. It actually looks like their flag (yellow top, blue shorts and red socks). On that basis alone they definitely deserve to go far in this tournament. Definitely.

That's my kind of football punditry!

I took a coach trip around West USA in August. They took a different route for much of the summer as they don't take coaches across Death Valley when it's too hot, so still haven't been there. Did make it to Scottsdale though, which was 116F and a bit like walking around in a hairdryer.

That's brilliant. Usually I support Australia when England/Britain no longer present in something, but as they are both out I'm supporting Netherlands, for the moment anyway. This is based purely on the fact that England vs Netherlands at Euro 96 was probably the best international football match I've ever been to and as they gave me so much enjoyment I might as well support them.

I did. However, he does occasionally need to drive my car, so I am reluctantly biting the bullet!
