For whatever reason I totally misread that. Possibly because the reason I was in Watford was to buy new glasses, though on this occasion I looked at, but didn't buy, shades.

Wilkinsons, B&M, Ikea, the big Asda store, I'd try those for cheap light shades. I'd look online first though to see if they have anything suitable. Did you want to take them to your other place, ie needs to fit in a suitcase?

I've seen some nice self assembly ones that you could fit in a case, but they weren't cheap. I think they were Scandinavian. Ah, they were, these ones:
    http://www.cloudberryliving.co.uk/normann-copenhagen-norm-69-lamp-shade-880-p.aspx
There are some links to other nice shades on the same page.

    Or these from Habitat:
    http://www.habitat.co.uk/coco-red-plastic-ceiling-light-shade-yellow/lighting//fcp-product/241306

    Or this one from Amazon:

    Any use?
Ah ha - I missed the transportable bit when I read Silvercar's original post.

I recently got one of these:
    http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/kaigami/product/volant-light-shade
    (not for that much, mind!)

I really like those Habitat ones, viva. I wonder if they have them in Homebase? Otherwise I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm near a Habitat.

Edit: they're not on the Homebase website but looks like they sell them at Argos :)

If he had taken up rowing or debating you would ask how that is going...this "hobby" needs the same interest but not more. No asking what her parents do, sizing up the size of the family fortune or social status. That stuff emerges over time.

See I'm failing already. 1 out 3 but asked in a very casual way. No offence taken I think.

    All good advice, thank you.

I'm not big on lampshades..... who'd think ... choosing lamp shades involves liking things that are more than the budget available.... therefore, like most things, it's best to stick with: "cheapest found on the day looked", so I'll probably set a budget of "max £3" and see what I stumble across.

When I want to buy stuff I load up Google, type in the item, hit the "shopping tag", then set the filter to "Price: Low to High" and see where prices start. If I'm not then on the floor, I'll see what the cheapest 2-3 can offer. That's then my budget for an item.

If I wanted "posher ones than I'd usually choose", maybe these at £2.49

Edit - see what happens when you start looking ...? These are £3.49. Budget's already creeping!!

Both sort of say "beach" as in sea colours ..... a bit.

I'm looking for light shades that are in stock, cheap and transportable but not made of paper. Tried Argos and Dunelm. Any other ideas?

BHS are good for lighting. Got some very large linen shades there in January at half the price of very similar ones in John Lewis.

Fair point, but he tells me he won't be following our trend and can't imagine getting married before 30.

That aside, how do I behave now eg should I ask after her when I speak to him?
I would. She's important to your son, so .... Yes. :)

They probably won't get married, but ......they might. Its their decision. Personally, I'd be treating the relationship with respect, because who knows which relationship with last and which will not? I'd treat them all like keepers tbh.

( especially the ones you dislike)

What lir said. And ... I'm not sure that the big question is whether she will end up being his wife in the future. She is his girlfriend now.

I know girls often communicate a lot more about their relationships and social lives than boys do, so maybe it's different, but I remember appreciating my parents taking a positive interest in all sorts of things I told them about various of my close friends as well as boyfriends. If they had implied that they weren't going to bother being interested in my friends/boyfriends other than the one I was going to end up marrying, I'd have felt they weren't interested in my life, or in me, even if that wasn't what they meant.

Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

A friend of mine has one of those puzzle shades. It has got very dusty and she is at a loss for how to dust it effectively.
Well, its harder I think, mother and sons. But my parents met hardly any of my partners. DH, nasty ex, and met a couple they didn't know were 'partners'. DH was the only one who stayed at home with me.

I think, bearing in mind both boys think it might be awkward it might be worth considering their judgement. Do you or could you visit ds? Take them both to supper somewhere? A shorter meet, on neutral ground, might be more comfortable for all?

Also, if this goes well, ds and other ds might be less 'private' in the future?

I like that idea. I remember first meeting LNE's parents when they were visiting him. A meal out (at the parents' expense) gives the young people a bit of a treat food-wise, and is about the right length of time to get to know people a bit without being overwhelmed.

I don't want to need to meet her, if he doesn't want me to.

I don't know whether he is concerned how we will behave or whether he thinks our home may appear a bit OTT to her, so he wanted to see her home first. He keeps telling me she is very unassuming.
