I would absolutely be avoiding any sort of fixed savings rate at the moment.
If you want a really low risk investment then index linked bonds are your choice.
If you want some risk to get a return, a company that pays a low or no dividend because it's growing quickly and so reinvesting the cash it throws off is probably a good idea.
The exception, again IMHO, is BHP Billiton/Rio Tinto. They will be throwing off vast amounts of cash over the next few years and will be paying massive dividends as they don't have any further big investment opportunities. Those two companies are the most screaming buys on the market right now I reckon.
If you want to take a big gamble that may or may not pay off, Fortescue Metals is an interesting company. They have had some 'interesting' relationships with various politicians but I think they might make you a few bob too. They do also have the capacity to lose you a lot of money so be warned.
Fill yer boots as they say.
Thanks Gen.
It's all academic ATM, but I have some hope that we may get some movement soon, and it's possible I might get some money within just a few months, but it's also possible I may not get it for another year or two or I suppose even longer. I can't at present see why it should take more than a year or so from here, but then at the beginning of the process I had no idea that I would still be in the waiting and uncertainty in 2014.
When I eventually get it, I will come back to you for more info.If Lydia is anything like me her question was whether she go for a 5 year 3% ISA or a 1 year 2% one....
Well, yes. You understand me very well, michaels.Although it's pretty certain I'll have rather more to deal with than would fit in an ISA, even under the new rules that have just been announced in the budget. My claim is based on everything my kids and I would have got from LNE over the next decade or more if he hadn't been killed, so it's supposed to be there when they grow up to provide for their futures without a dad. I'll save quite a lot of it, I expect - I'm quite risk averse (well, financially anyway) - but I also think it'll probably be time for me to begin to try investing some too.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

IBM was an amazing company until it wasn't. Motorola lead the way in mobile phones before being overtaken by Nokia.
Nobody could come close to Triumph motorbikes until the Japanese came along. A great but arrogant incumbent is the great shorting opportunity for me.0 -
I just checked the Week Ahead for DS's school in the vain hope that this week's is still up. It's not, but I discovered he breaks up for Easter on Friday 28th. I knew when he went back (23rd) but was confused as another parent has already asked me to collect their son, I thought on the 8th April.
DD doesn't finish until the 11th. She goes back on 29th April, meaning I have at least one child at home for 31 days on the trot!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

twice in recent mpnths councelling has been raisd as potentially helpful for me as a way to come to terms with health limitations etc. i,m not really a fan but have been more seriously considering of late. one of my parents also suggested this week i saw the councellor they saw for marriage guidance together years ago to talk about general frustration. i must be giving off an angry vibe!vivatifosi wrote: »It's a shame lir isn't around because I know this is something that she's been looking into.
From tomorrow, Aldi is selling its own brand version of the Roomba for £149.99. Actual Roombas are £700, so significantly lower price, though I have no idea how good they are.

big dog is fine...too fine almost, but funnily enough the normal bloods for a grey did still make is worth doing a urine test of dog sog, she has a very , very low level infection and VERY early crystal formation, mainly caused i think by the fact she only likes to drink from a runnning tap. so i'm glad i was cautious and ran all the tests. i have to have a ct scan it turns out. they wantr to mri agaon and i've dclined but i'm doing the ct because its a new bt of body (this time small intestine). i'm about to start a drug they know won't do anythng for six weeks before trying another off licence thing that might.
i apologise for the cold weather , but you see , we HAD to test this new heatingits working really well. hot water got hot quicker than an immersion, i was amazed.
in other news, we have heard of someone who had the same issues from the heating system we tried in the same time scales. they have not had any money back. we've asked the person who knows them to put them in touch with us so dh can help them get their money back.0 -
Ok, to update everyone on the right thread (d'oh) and to avoid confusion the next steps in my treatment are:
Monday I have a PET scan. I get injected with radioactive glucose. Anything fast growing (like a cancer for example) will need lots of energy and glucose provides energy for the human body. As a result a cancer cell will suck up much more glucose than a skin cell or a liver cell. If wait a bit and then look at the bits of you that are radioactive then you'll see if there are any other cancers in the body. That's the idea.
Tuesday I have an operation to remove Leon aka Leon the Lymphoma Lump aka Bloody LLL. That is also called a Grand Biopsy. They take the whole thing out, under general anesthetic, and then find out exactly what it is.
Wednesday Sit around at home feeling sorry for myself.
Thursday Back to work where they won't stab me with needles, chop my neck up etc.
Friday Work BBQ which I am cooking for:eek:
That might all get disrupted by chemo.
How long do the deleterious effects of chemotherapy last BTW?
i know you have had lots of replies on this but i just wanted to say that a few years a go i was walking a friends EIGHT dogs with my then three while she had chemo (this is when dog dog learned to point). the first couple of weeks friend was off work she walked with me and kept saying she felt like such a fraud and because she wasn't working she actually felt well rested and like a bit of a slightly boring and stressful holiday and she enjoyed our daily walked and got frustrated with my slowness. by third week she looked a bit tired and was walking at more my pace. but said, she still felt really like it was very easy for her compared to what else she was seeing hearing and reading. then i started collecting leads from her at the door and saying, look, just stay home, rest, its what you are off work for, then gradually i started letting myself in, getting leads, yelling i was there and taking dogs, then.....eventually, stopped yelling up, i'd just take dogs.

Youngest and Josh finish on the 2nd (a Wednesday) and don't go back until the 28th...they have an extended holiday due to the move into the new build. We pick James up on the 6th and take him back on the 27th, so I will have all 3 for 21 days and 2 of them for 26 days.
At least though, I will have all 3 of them here for my birthday, didn't think that was going to happen this year, so a nice outcome. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Isaac breaks up on 4th April and is back on 29th. For the summer, he breaks up on 18th July and isn't back until 9th September!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Paris-Roubaix, my favourite cycling race, starts on 4th April so what would be ideal would be a course of Chemo that starts on the 3rd and lasts about a week. I would be 'forced' to lie on the sofa and could watch those poor old beggars try to ride over the pave (seriously, google Paris-Roubais, it's an absolute beast of a race).lostinrates wrote: »no excuse not to cook at the barbeque i think;)
Probably not. Quite a good excuse not to bring fancy deserts along though I reckon.lostinrates wrote: »scars or no scars, the nice girls seem to dig you gen. seems like the chaps aren't so far behind.:D
They are only human so I really can't blame them. My fear is that a masculine scar might tip a couple over the edge.
BTW, great to see that !!!!*al got beat 6-0 yesterday. I laughed like a drain.0 -

Same here. I'm also taking notes, so occasionally even use the pause button. I think I would need to learn shorthand to watch a sped up Dan.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
