I've spent the day assisting in making the bottom tier of a 3 tier wedding cake - sister #2's mate is getting married at the end of June, so it needed to be done now.
I've seen the results before, and seen Mama doing the icing and creation of tiny sugar flowers and that kind of thing, but I'd no idea how much work there is in actually making the cake to start with.
We made only the biggest, bottom one, which involved nearly 9.5 lb of assorted dried fruit (picked over for stalks yesterday, and chopped, and that's all very time-consuming and fiddly) and then great mounds of butter, sugar, flour, spices and so forth, and 16 (16!!!) large eggs. Just mixing it all together took ages, and after chucking in impressive quantities of brandy and sherry, it went into the oven at 2.30pm.
You can't even mix it all together, because it's just too big - even the vast porcelain basins aren't big enough, so we divided everything into thirds and mixed it part at a time, before it all went into the vast tin to cook. We got a polite, helpful friendly, strong young man to do the lifting (we asked Bruv, anyway).
It takes about 9 - 10 hours to cook.
Mama reckoned it needed another half hour about 10 minutes ago, and I'm babysitting it (I had a rest this afternoon, while she's tired, I think. After a bit of casual cake-making she then made salmon fishcakes and fresh asparagus for dinner by way of leisure).
I'm impressed, I had no idea of the hard work involved! Isaac greatly enjoyed helping with some of it, but left the "picking over 4lb of currants for stalks" bit to others....
The dried fruit and sugar:
Butter and sugar mixed:
A third of the total mixture being sieved (by Isaac) and then mixed (by Mama):...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
My mother made my sibling a wedding cake ( sister then eloped .... Poor mother didn't get a wedding from either of us) but it was professionally iced. I helped. It was hard enough work with no icing to worry about.
Did you enjoy baking it NDG?0 -
Lydia....
That carriage is going to turn into a pumpkin.I'm off to bed too.

Yes, it's always interesting watching someone do something well, and helping too. Isaac and I were the labour, Mama was the driving force (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Good night lir (and everyone else). :hello:Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Thanks for the good luck wishes
Think it went well, but we'll have to see. There weren't any real curve-ball questions, and I made sure I backed up things I said with examples, standard stuff. So I'm not sure how far wrong I could have gone!
Now doing an assignment for tomorrow, think it's going to be a late one... As always.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -
Had a mini car donkey's years ago. Felt you were in a racing car as it was so low you had an amazing impression of speed.Toddlers on tricycles were passing me I'm sure.
Eventually traded it in for our first bought new car, by which stage was held together with sellotape and wishful thinking. The car dealer looked at it as if we were a candid camera sketch.
Back in my student days my housemate had a mini van. A dull green colour, it looked like it wasn't there. Literally you wouldn't give it a second glance; the Americans spent a fortune replicating this in their Stealth bombers. Loads of us used to squeeze in the back to get lifts back from the student union.
Dodgy-looking people kept on knocking on the door offering to buy it and my mate became scared it would just vanish. A handy little car totally lacking in glamour but bursting with utility.

The cakes I decorated for my brother's wedding.....cost the grand total of £27 all in, including the cakes. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
A previous employer specialised in sugarcraft baking, whose worth I seriously understimated. When visiting relatives in Glasgow I saw signs outside a major hotel advertising a sugarcraft exhibition inside which was from my college 400+ miles away.
I found out that at that time that in the list of shortage trades that Australia was trying to recruit, No. 1 was sugarcraft bakers. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
