When I was growing up, one common ditty was The Gas Man Cometh; it's from the 1940s or so

    Words: http://www.iankitching.me.uk/humour/hippo/gas.html
Or watch it on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyeMFSzPgGc

100% safe for work and anywhere/everywhere.

I remember an article in the newspaper from about 1990 about a gas man who had been made chief of an African tribe.

They made a crack about how his investiture was going to be happening the following year but they couldn't guarantee whether it would be morning or afternoon.

I've not felt any desire to explore this area, join things, etc, as the future was never in any way clear.... I only wanted to start things I had a chance of continuing with....

So now I can make plans - everything from where to store the washing powder to what to do on Sundays :)

Before there was no point going out as, once out, there are things to buy and I wasn't feeling able to buy things (knick knacks, even food without a freezer) .... with a house that's owned there's a purpose to going out ... to find knick knacks and food :)

Income streams.... firstly I will explore decoupage and papier mache and things that need "mucky space" which can be stored in the shed... I'll then discover I have no talent and look for other things :)

How heartwarming to have such encounters. There are good people out there.

It is. I was very grateful to him, promise!

It's Flanders and Swann again - as mentioned before on this thread (the duo, not the specific song).

No sympathy .... you chose to have them :)
You must have known the deal meant 24/7, 365 days/year for at least 20-25 years!

It kinda gets easier as they get older because they can do stuff for themselves. They can get themselves entirely ready for school in the mornings now: lunches made, breakfast made and eaten, uniforms on, face and hands washed, teeth brushed, sunscreen on. That's been the case for at least a year.

I'm now in the process of getting them cooking.

We're going to make tons of bread this week or so that I'm off. Probably a loaf or something else every other day. It'd be great if I can wake up on a Saturday morning to the kids having cooked a loaf of fresh bread. That would make up for a lie in. :D

Isaac does all of that, bar the suncream, which I do in a paranoid fashion myself. Or OH does.

So we're deciding to start all over again with one that just screams and yells and eat and defecates! This one has a poor sense of direction, as he's spent most of hte morning trying to kick his way out via my right ribs.

The things they can't do for themselves get harder, though, such as maths homework and discussions on astrophysics and whether property is justifiable or selfish.

Thanks LIR that's really helpful and quite encouraging.

I'm used to dealing with pain: "cycling is suffering" and all that. This is a bit different though.

I'm starting to get a horrible feeling that alcohol makes the pain much worse. I've read that can be the case with lymphoma occasionally. Oh well. I drink too much anyway and quitting would be better for my cycling too.

Different of course, its not choice, it doesn't stop when you take a day off and it just feels different, but the coping skills are IME transferable.

Cycling is suffering? You sound like several dance teachers I've had and one particular riding trainer. :D. Other, normal Personal trainers IME are nothing on the punishment a dance teacher or a nasty riding trainer. :D. Yeah, not rushing to take up cycling now.....:D

So I phoned the gas man....who was in Telford with no record in his diary. He did admit it was his mistake and is coming at 9 tomorrow.

I am chilling, it looks beautiful out, DW and kids are at play in the park.I hate hay fever although feel guilty for doing so as the rest of you have much more to put up with and accept with much more grace. Should be doing filing, emails, arranging plumber and cleaner, decorating but somehow these days when I am not at work I just want to relax and veg out.
    I think....

Our dks don't do enough for themselves IMHO. DW is too much of a perfectionist so won't let them do things themselves as it is not up to her standards.

If DKs have any sense they will continue to fail to reach her standards, then, and get it all done for them (-:

Babies are basically machines for turning milk very noisily into poo.

It's a quote from perhaps the greatest rider of all time, Eddie Merckx. He rode the Tour de France with a fractured cheekbone so he knows plenty about suffering. He also set the record distance for cycling in an hour in 1972 which was only properly beaten in 2000. Even then, he set the record around Mexico City at high altitude whereas the record was beaten at 10m above sea level!

The biggest problem with cycling as not suffering is you can't give up halfway through. If I've ridden 50km (30 miles) out somewhere then I'm committed to riding the 50km back home again!

If you get a big fat sit-up-and-beg bike and good gears then cycling can be far more comfortable than walking. That's my training plan for the next year or so in fact. Get something heavy and comfy and ride it everywhere:
