When The Boy was born I had a, probably unhealthy, obsession with the size of his balls. They were enormous! They went down to normal a couple of weeks later.0

I remember being much struck by the colour of my nephew's balls when he was a baby. His dad is my brother, and therefore white like me. His mother is black. When he was a baby, his skin was very pale so that he didn't look mixed race at all, apart from one small area of him that looked very definitely black. Maybe that's standard for mixed race baby boys, but it was a surprise to me at nappy changing time when I was visiting.
By the time he was a few months old, most of his skin had darkened to a normal mixed race sort of colour. I have no idea what happened to the very dark parts of him because I never saw them again!Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Not the sort of question you can drop into casual conversation, either!
Sister #1 and I were mates at primary school with sisters who had a black father and white mother, and they looked very different indeed - one looked mediterraean, the other much, much darker.
The whole colouring / gene thing is fascinating; I know LIR has mentioned it before in relation to horses' colouring.
I have trouble believing that fair hair is recessive - my sisters, bruv and I are all fair-haired, although sister #1 is reddish with it. We have one fair-haired parent (my mother), one fair-haired grandparent (my maternal Granny) and one fair-haired great-grandparent, her father. All the rest were dark or dark red. And Isaac's colouring is fair too.
This new baby could be fair, dark like OH and his Dad, or flaming red, like OH's mother and brother. Anything, really!
I reckon half mine and OH's children would statistically have blue eyes, as I do, so must pass on a blue gene, and OH's mother had blue eyes and his father brown, so OH must have one of each. Isaac's are blue. But 2 children isn't much of a statistical sample....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I do find it very strange when you read in the newspaper about someone who fell out of a plane and broke his arms and legs and is then described as "Lucky".
Lucky isn't falling out of the damn plane.
Lucky could be bad luck no?
I have lots of the best luck in the world.....I have fir for a start, and some of the worst.....just not much middling, or absent influence either way of luck!0 -

Sounds like a perfectly normal thing for a father to be aware of.
We leave the mothers to obsess about their cute little dimples, we have more important matters to consider.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

DH who is sort of yellows greeny skinned that might be considered olive when its had some sun, was much more fair as a child, not dark like he is now....you've seen him, haven't you? Cannot remember.
and i was properly blonde.
Dh's parents were both dark, coarse hair. ( his mother was a bottle blonde who was straight but not easy hair) dh's brother remains moudily fair and has soft, straight totally non Mediterranean hair.
Edit: your families blondness actually seems to confirm recessive nature of blond/e because in the previous generations a blonde gene carried, say, on your fathers side, has been suppressed by the dominant darker colouring...and needed to be passed on to join your mothers recessive expressed genes to show.0 -
Pronunciation of Bwlchtocyn... Bull-chhh-tock-in The chhh bit is from the throat, sounds a bit like choking.

I am so happy as this morning OH dragged himself to A*di to be there when it opened at 8am (surely proof of true love!)in order to purchase me a shower stool. :j It will be lovely to be able to have a shower when I want to now. While I quite like a soak in the bath sometimes it takes so blooming long to fill that even with doing my face and cleaning my teeth I'm still getting in while it's only half full. <rolls eyes> I loathe grab rails with a passion, would mess up our lovely tiles, and besides my legs would give up on me before I finished showering. I'll be able to try out our downstairs shower too, will have to get OH to show me how it works.
All we need now is to find the screwdrivers so OH can finish screwing the stool together. He's off over the water today to see DD2 and his Mum so I skipped the bath I should have had as am so stiff from the journey home yesterday I was afraid of getting stuck in the bath!
Was amazed at how much the front garden has come on in the week we were away! The grape hyacinths are more or less finished, but the narcissi are in bud, the quince is leafing up, and the climbing roses have loads of new growth. Will have to get out there and tackle the periwinkle though, it's making a bid to take over the world! I do love its blue flowers, and its variegated leaves, but it's a real thug, and is strangling several other bushes. Our new neighbours next door prob won't want it taking over their front garden either!
Have decided to have a very restful day today, as after 2 days gardening at caravan followed by the trip home I'm knackered. Was so tired that I fell asleep in the car on the way back. You will be relieved to hear that OH was driving.
Pastures, thanks so much for the reminder of the estate agent show. :A We'll be watching it on catch up when OH gets back home.0 -

I've done many jobs where I've been visiting housebound people, very ill, terminally ill etc. What has never ceased to amaze me is the intelligence & the desire & willingness to overcome barriers.
On Monday of this week I had an email from a member of staff to make me aware of his current situation.
He has recently lost the use of one of his arms, it was doagnosed as not through a stroke but through the collapse of vertebrae, he will have surgery in a week or two. He is however managing to continue to work part time.
This chap already uses a wheel chair following trampoline accident at 18, cannot use his legs at all and has limited use of his arms and hands. Needs a hoist to move from seat to bed to chair etc.
My admiration for his spirit, optimism, courage and sheer bloody mindedness is beyond measure.0 -

I think the reddish tints throughout my family also explain it a bit - when on holiday and not shaving, my dark-haired father grows a bright ginger stubble, and red's recessive, I think.
I've not see your DH in the flesh, only in a couple of photos of him in his professional guise....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

My dad had black hair and a ginger beard for much of his life. Both the hair and the beard have been grey since his mid sixties, though.
Have been watching the first episode of that estate agent thing on iplayer. I like the young lad in Exeter and the blonde girl in Durham - the one trying to sell the house in a dire area that's been done up to within an inch of its life that nobody wants to buy. The bloke in Birmingham annoyed me with his endless going on about "the real world" as though other people's worlds are less real than his, and the guy catering to London's super-rich is a really nasty piece of work. I wouldn't want to have anything to do with anyone who treats his staff like that.Do you know anyone who's bereaved?
