James has managed to secure a part time job helping young people struggling with English, maths and science, right up his street and along the lines of what he wants to do in life (his aim now is to become a teacher in philosophy!)

Cripes. He's not financially driven then! Good luck to him though. I think being a philosopher would be fantastic. My brain isn't creative enough for it personally.

My advice to the kids is to do what they are:

    1. Interested in
    2. Can make a living at

In the end they are going to want to enjoy work but also make money. I don't want to see them whinging on here in 20 years time that house prices are too expensive.

If they choose to go for #1 at the expense of #2 then I'll support them emotionally but they will understand by that point that if you choose to be a road sweeper because you enjoy the work then you'll also enjoy the relative fruits of your labour.

Having said that, by the time my kids are getting jobs the Zombie Robot Apocalypse of Road Sweepers will be well underway.

Unless you carry a piece of paper with your aunt's budgie's previous owner's middle name so you can supply the 11th and penultimate letter.

I'm amazed at the amount of security there is in applying for university. I wouldn't have thought there was enough identity fraud to justify the layers of it.

That's nuts. It's probably about immigration fraud. Bring over 5 sex slaves and a bright girl to do 6 courses in Slavic languages or something.

Business Plan cash forecasts. Not something I've ever really had to do before and I feel like I am making it all up as I go along. It's a puzzler, that's for sure, quite why they think there's a chance in h*ck that I'll come close to the mark or what the point of it is except to extract cash from wary bankers.

I guess that all the black and white figures gives them an air of confidence that my normal 'Heck if I know. Let's start trading and find out' doesn't.

I've never had to do a business plan cash forecast, or indeed any forecast of any type. Frankly you need a crystal ball. On the remote chance of anyone asking nowadays, I just point out that I've been in business for 23 years, so I can't be doing too badly. Bamboozle them with BS and sound confident because as chewie says....
The person reviewing your business plan forecast probably has no experience of running a business or any idea what the likely costs will be so as long as it looks sensible...

Possibly also something to do with uni fees now being £27k for a three year course plus loans to cover living costs over that period being as much as another £22,500. The government probably wants it's money back at the end and doesn't want to find that it is owed hundreds of millions of pounds by persons such as Mr R. Sole of no fixed abode. Expect there is an AML compliance angle as well.

My house is a total dump. There is proper building type dirt on every surface and I can't see out of the windows for dirt. Can't do anything about the windows it as there is scaffolding up, making the house dark as well. The dirt on the surfaces reappears instantaneously.

Taken to terrible comfort eating this morning. A can of lilt, two sausage rolls, a Topic and two Viennese Whirls for breakfast.

I hate this house. Is it possible for a house to ruin your life?

    Yes and no.

I think yes if it has something that can impact on health, or in surroundings where its impossible to live. I think yes and no where, more often, it can really impact on our frames of mind and we feel got at by it and circumstance and all the little things heap up.

Even though I am still experiencing some difficulties, being able to take a bath has improved my frame of mind without doubt. While hot water for cleaning was easily get able from a kettle, having it from a tap is some how so much easier and exciting.

Having that red machine out, that same day I contacted a joiner who I am trying to arrange an appt with to come and look at a back door for me. Imagine.....a real back door instead of a palate with a tarp and some cardboard boxes for insulation, or just an opening in summer. I actually like the 'just an opening' in summer.....but it will be nicer still to have a proper main use for residents back door I think. :D

Everybody missed lir's birthday, which is how I like it. I plan it that way. This year was slightly too efficient. I do prefer to spend it with DH! He made Herculean effort and got home to spend the night with me. He has a day off later in the week to see a doctor I wasn't going to see but who isn't the neurologist with me.

We're being visited by a bullfinch. He's very handsome indeed! I don't think I've ever seen one before.
