Whats the best value breakdown cover
Hi guys and girls
whats the best value breakdown cover out there? at the moment I have it included with my insurance and about to renew noticed it is about £70 we are paying for top of the line RAC cover.
Its my wifes car its nearly 5 years old and mostly local journeys but she does do a 300 mile round trip every now and again so I would like some cover that would get her home.
Insurance expires on 20th so got a few days left to sort

Interesting, I didnt know such a thing existed, I am dubious though, IS everything covered or do they have get out clauses.
Are they prompt at reimbursing,
Is there any negatives0 -
Depends what you call everything.
What does your top package cover?
I had the top package, But even then it doesnt cover a trailer breaking down. Classed as commercial, But add club membership and they will also cover the caravan breaking down.
Auto Aid seems to get good reviews and seem to pay out fairly quickly. Just the thought of paying a huge amount to get recovered and then a dispute arising.
RAC costs more, But i know im covered.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I'm with Autonational which costs me £66 a year for the full package. I can't actually comment on their reliability as I've never had a breakdown since I started buying crappy car ironically! But I did phone them to change the car over and they were very efficient! Good customer service is half the battle IMHO.0

The AA, the RAC and the other breakdown service 'providers' mentioned are all now businesses out to make a profit for their shareholders.
And I don't think the prices quoted will include any International cover at all.
I decided to join an old fashioned club dedicated solely to assisting their members.
€84 gets you worldwide coverage of the ADAC - the German motor club. Only €72 if you have a Blue Badge.
You just phone their emergency number (in English) and they arrange for whichever breakdown service is best/fastest/closest to you. You do not need to speak one word of German.
More extensive and comprehensive coverage than any UK based alternative.
It less than half of what I used to pay for full UK & European breakdown, relay, home-start or whatever they call it these days.0 -
Got a letter from RAC today , They've really have slashed their prices for all types of breakdowns they do .My own is up for renewal in April with AA . I'm not really expecting a lot from their renewal quote. So , I'll be joining RAC for the coming year.0

I tried that for a few years - to get the new member discounted attractive prices.
I joined the AA one year and the RAC the next - still too expensive if you include European cover - even for one trip.0 -
Just to add I dont need european cover and i dont need trailer or caravan cover.
Would need home start and get me home cover (if thats what its called)0 -

Also check with our bank if they offer a paid subscription current account that gives you breakdown cover. My wife and I are with Smile (Co-Op) and pay £13/month on our joint current account we get Eu wide full RAC breakdown cover (recovery, relay, home start etc), for both of us in all our vehicles (car, motorbikes etc). Plus we got a bunch of stuff like phone/gadget cover, better rates and so on .
We too started out with breakdown cover thrown in with our car insurance, but it didn't cover my motorbike. With RAC couples cover coming in at £160/yr and UK only, overall after weighing it all up, it worked out a lot cheaper.0
