Refused a refund! (Shoes)

Basically because it's still within 6 months of purchase, they have to prove that they are not faulty. I'd be asking for a letter from their supplier as proof - might be too much hassle!
In fact, although your contract is with JD Sports, it might not be a bad thing to send some photos over to Nike complaining. There are forms to contact them on the Nike website. Sometimes the supplier/manufacturer will tell the retailer to resolve it.
You may also get good results posting on the JD Sports facebook page if they have one - presumably the FB page is handled by head office so they may disapprove of what the store manager is doing and give a bit of clout. Even if it's a franchise, it's still bad publicity for the chain as a whole.
Regards the refund itself - you would only be entitled to this if you were not deemed to have accepted the goods (acceptance occurs after a reasonable amount of time) or if you were deemed to have accepted the goods, you would be entitled to a refund if JD Sports could not repair or replace the goods within a reasonable period of time.
At this stage I would suggest writing a letter (preferably sending it recorded delivery, or take it in personally and ask them to sign a copy saying it has been received) that rejects the boots. It would be useful to include a copy of the receipt, explain how many times you've worn them and that they have not lasted a reasonable period of time before showing signs of deterioration.0
