I can only assume it is so they can be CREATIVE with their Accounts. With cash payments and infrequent receipts, I presume several transactions a day get "lost" as far as the tax man is concerned.

What other reason can there be please?

It's very expensive for very small retailers to accept card payments! Big retailers like Tesco get very low fees for card fees indeed!

I take out £5 each day for my coffee and lunch. Don't tend to use cash any other time. Unless it's on a night out then I will take cash instead of a card.

Window cleaner, Sunday papers and a very occasional hot drink from the machine at the pool (only £1 and very good hot chocolate). Emergency £20 in glove compartment, £1 coin for trolleys in car and another £1 for swimming locker in swimming bag.
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me

I'm curious. What supermarkets are you having to use coins for trolleys? None of the supermarkets I've been at recently have had them for years.

    Sainsbury's
    Tesco
    Asda
    Lidl
    Aldi

However I don't even use trolleys myself! I don't spend enough in one trip to justify a trolley lol!

My local M&S Simply Food also requires a quid to release a trolley, and I believe the Morrisons on the other side of town do too, although I very rarely go there so I could be mis-remembering.

I use cash for quite a few things.

Parking meter in town. Only 50p for up to 2 hours, but still need cash.

    Stuff from market stalls/carboot sales

    Charity Shops

A bag of chips from the chippy

    Takeaway

    Church collection plate

Bus fares/taxi fares (rarely use them, but do occasionally.)

Hairdresser/barbers - they NEVER take cards.

I keep 10 to 15 pounds on me all the time, and will often get small things with it. ie; if I am hungry while I'm out and want a banana and a bottle of water. Or if I just want a loaf of bread and a cookie from Greggs. Or a newspaper or magazine, or anything else that costs couple of pounds or less.

The only one I've been to recently which required £1 was Aldi. I have a feeling Homebase trolleys do too although it's been a while since I've been in there.

Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury's are all free.

It must depend on the branch you visit!
