Im a Parking ticket idiot aaagggh!

Options
Can I have advice for being an idiot please?
Ill try and keep this short:

Parked in a private car park at a supermarket, paid for 3 hours 80p. Got to car 20 minutes early and drove home.

Received a parking fine today. £50 if paid in 2 weeks or £85 if longer. There was a photograph of my car entering and leaving with the times logged. Yup i was within 3 hours.
Amazingly I still had my parking ticket which proved yes, again I was back well before my ticket expired.
Couldnt understand.
Then I noticed, sigh. When I bought my ticket I had to enter my car registration, I admit to being a little harrassed and rushed and The first half of my reg is correct but the second part isnt.

So to recap,
They have photographs of my car entering and leaving with the car reg very visible.
I also have my ticket that has the 80p paid to prove i was on time but the second half of the reg is wrong.

Is there any point appealing as I have proof I paid etc but it was my fault entering the wrong digits.

What an idiot I am.

Any info on this would be fantastic as I havnt the foggiest.

Thanks loads :)

As this is a pay car park and you have paid the fee (80p) the landowner has sufferd no loss.
They can not fine you, nor can they issue penalties or any other punative charges.
Ask yourself this: could you say that due to the poor design of the car park machine/keyboard that the landowner suffered a loss of £85 depsite the fact that you had paid for the parking, at the standard rate of 80p, and even left earlier?

would you say that £85 equals a genuine pre estimate of loss (GPEOL ) caused by an incorrect number in a pay and display machine?

edit, who was the parking company and in what supermarket?

Is this supermarket in England or Wales?

Not in Scotland or Northern Ireland?

    It makes a big difference.
  • Hmm, it was Morrisons car park and the company is Parking Eye (Chorley).
So I honestly legally dont have to pay?

    Im gonna write an appeal.

A friend told me, although the letter says I have 2 weeks before the fine increases from £50 to £85, if I appeal its put on hold and if I lose the appeal I still have 2 weeks to pay the lower amount. Do you know if this is correct?

You can appeal to Parking Eye - they will reject your appeal, of course - they always do.

Then you can appeal to POPLA and beat the money-grabbing scumbags on legal grounds.

Take your time and come back if you need clarification.

Sent nothing by way of an appeal until you have run a draft copy past the regulars on here who have 100% success at POPLA against Parking Eye.

One thing is for sure - you are not going to pay £85 - or £55 - you are going to pay NOTHING at all.
  • Hahaha aw bless ya thankyou.

I was gonna just send a very honest letter saying completely my fault that I mistakenly entered wrong digits in my haste, admit being a twerp but showing how Id not only paid in full but left early too and had proof of both
    What do you think?

No you dont have to pay, will you be able to pop into the morrisons store in question?
often the easiest way to get this cancelled is to say the right things to the store manager, parking eye only care about their bottom line - ie you paying them money that they have no right to, if you can avoid appeals/challenges popla appeals etc etc then do so.
However keep a close eye on the clock you only have so long to reply to parking eye even if the supermarket is dealing with it, get your challenge ready with parking eye.
Only stop when you get a letter form Morrisons confirming that the charge has been cancelled.

you shold also be looking at it like this - who the hell do Morrisons think they are in alowing this company to harass their customers in their name?
Parking /eye are merely acting for and on behalf of that Morrison's store

Only say the driver did it, not you.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • Can I ask who POPLA is please?
That link is excellent, Il print off a copy of it in work tomorrow to refer to.
