I suggest the sooner you contact the ombudsman the sooner the chance of you getting your money back.
I'd advise anyone to contact the ombudsman sooner rather than later.
I've been trying to persuade First Utility to provide a final bill on switching from them in April 2014. I was too patient but eventually contacted the ombudsman in Feb 2015. I got this reply from the ombudsman: The deadline for bringing a complaint to us is nine months from the date you first told First Utility about the problem. As you first raised your complaint with the service provider over nine months ago, we are unable to help..
So don't make the same mistake.Wearing my other one today.0 -
Just a note to say I saw a segment on Martin's TV programme a little while ago about gas companies holding onto overpaid money.
Tonight I dug out my old paperwork from September 2012 from when I switched from EDF to Scottish Power, as I remember at the time EDF said there was a problem with a meter reading and they'd liaise with Scottish Power to sort everything out and refund any overpaid balance.
I forgot all about that until Martin's programme, so tonight I finally got round to checking to see if they'd sorted it.
I tried to access my old EDF account on-line (I wish they'd send out paper statements!) , but the password didn't work. A 'chat box' popped up and an EDF person asked how she could help. I explained what I wanted to check and she asked for my old account number etc.
Anyway, just 3 minutes later, she'd gone through my account and confirmed there was some money owing to me, and she would get it refunded to my bank account.
The balance owing to me from 17 months ago (which they never got back to me about) was.............£1,364.22.
A brilliant result -- but I do feel an idiot for not knowing how much I'd overpaid, so I urge everyone to do the same as me and check. Think of the interest they're earning on our money!
Many thanks Martin - you're a star! :money:0 -

My problem is, like a lot of people I switched regularly and I always thought (stupidly) that the energy companies had to switch the credit balance to the new account. Now of course I don't have the account nos, and the energy companies cleverly deactivate your account once you leave so I cannot check if my credit balances were actually ever paid to me which I have a feeling they weren't !!:(0 -
After reading some of the posts it looks like other people are in my position aswell & have dealt with this unprofessional company -Scottish power.
I switched to EON from Scottish power in December & my account is £315 in credit & they continued to take DD in January & Feb. Contacted them on numerous occasions, each time I get different excuses - such as
-My account has been sent for auditing purposes (was adavised standard procedure when you switch energy companys)
-My electrical account wasn't closed down.
- Lastest being they haven't received my gas reading.
Im constantly trying to be fobbed off! Ive raised two complaints
1) Account not being closed etc, 2) Customer Service.
No one wants to take responsibility or help, I have not been contacted regarding my complaints. When I contact them they wont refer me to the the complaint manager supposedly dealing my complaint, they wont email the person supoosedly dealing with this. Each time I try to ring them Im waiting in the queue for over 40 minutes.
I can not believe the customer service they provide at Scottish Power its appalling, all I want is the money that is due to me which is rightfully mine!!
its All well & good changing suppliers to get it cheaper but its so stressful and inconvenient.:mad:
are there any routes other ex Scottish power customers have taken & got their credit refunds please???0 -

I am in the same boat and on the edge of cancelling my contract with them altogether as there is no penalty charge at the moment. I was told on 5/2 I would have to wait between 5-10 days max for a refund, I am still waiting. I emailed them on Saturday and every time I get a confirmation email back telling me I will get a reply within 5 days !!!!! 5 Days!!!!!! It didn't take that long to send a bluddy letter when I received bills in the post and an email takes 5 days. Incompetent load of useless individuals. I don't know how they keep their customers.
I am just about to ring them again and will threaten to leave them for good if I don't get my money back of £164. It's not bad eenough they rip us off with over inflated prices when wholesale prices have dropped months ago, they still don't want to drop the payments or send back your money. I feel like cancelling my direct debits and ask for a bill and make them bluddy wait like they make me wait and let ME get the interest on MY money for a change!
I am so angry, I need to take a blood pressure pill !0 -
I have just spoken to Scottish Power and I am furious ! He told me the refund had been rejected the next day (though I was told bu CS that the £164.61 would be refunded in 5/10 days), he said that even though I spoke to her on the 5th Feb after a payment went through on 2/2, that that payment could not be included in the refund as it had not been billed from 26/1. He then asked me for my readings and told me that the cost of my elec & gas for 23 days was £104 (£4.50 per day)! This after gas and elec prices have supposed to fall and I paid £273 for 91 days on the qtr previously (£3 per day). Something is wrong somewhere but because the calculations are so complex to work out all I can do is work out the cost per day and it is certainly not right based on daily usage.
They have only agreed to refund £60 which is what is left after bringing the billing up to date. I am going to ask for quotes from the smaller companies as I still feel I am being ripped off.
Then I went back into my account and they have raised the mthly DD by £1 without telling me in my phone call.

What a disgrace Scottish Power is !
Just read this on Martin's website and have to say we have never been credited with any money for being in excess of £33 in credit on our account:
"It also pays £1 on every £33 above £100 you're in credit, on balances up to £500. This sum, which can be up to £12, is paid when your direct debit is reassessed each year. More info on the Scottish Power website."
We were £164 in credit at the time of our moving over to the new tariff on 5th February despite the fact that our old tariff should have run until December 2015, they have changed us over but insisted on billing us £104 for 23 days energy used and the 23 days took us up to 23rd February, they then agreed to refund us £60 credit on our bill dated 18th February. Our new payments start on 2nd March. I do object to them billing me for 23 days on my old tariff to avoid repaying any credit on the account also. Under the old system they only ever got your money for energy used at the end of the quarter and then if you paid promptly, sometimes you didn't pay for another 2 weeks, now they want you billed up almost every other week to avoid giving you any of your money back but they sit on your credit all through the summer with the excuse that you need the credit to pay your winter bill ! I am tempted to go back to paper billing, at least my money stayed mine until the bill came in !
My complaint is that we have never been offered any £1 on every 33 above £100 since we have been with Scottish Power which is some 5 yrs. We receive a tiny bit of discount (£1.28) for this last bill. They have never even mentioned this £1 saving on every £33 above £100 in credit !
Has anyone else ever received this ?0 -
On 23/02/15 I received a letter from npower informing me I have a credit of £34.26 on my energy account.
I haven't been with npower for circa 6 yrs so; a) why did they not include the refund cheque in the letter, instead of hanging on to it for a bit longer and no doubt earning even more interest on it ( yes it's only 30 odd quid, but add that the the other 30 odd quids owed to others....)
and b) should I pick up the phone and ask them for interest for a massively delayed refund??
As a point of interest, I switch every year or 2 and I received a refund from EON several years ago to the tune of £1,400! can you imagine how long they had overcharging me for before they 'noticed'? I accept an element of responsibility, however as a single parent I just made sure by DDs were paid and didn't exceed my outgoings.
Best get on the blower to Scottish Power now, I guess :-)0 -
