Where does law stand on use of 10l+ jerry cans?
Options
Law says max 20l stored at home, 10l metal and 2x5l plastic, but what about if you dont intend on storing? Background is i have 2 cars and at morrisons i often have 50p-£1 off a litre up to 100l. My car only 32l tank and wifes 50l, so to make the most i was thinking of filling wifes and then getting 20l jerry can for mine to fill at home. I often swap cars so we both need petrol at roughly same time.

If you are intending to fill up a metal jerry can with petrol, make sure it is earthed before you start. If you have it sitting on a rubber mat in the boot or on carpet, it is unlikely to be earthed.0

Was intending on plastic anyway, i dont like the thought of metal cans in the car0

You dont like the thought of metal cans?
Much safer than a bit of plastic. Some of the flatter ones have a honeycomb insert to prevent them exploding in a fire. You cannot get much safer than that.
I have some of the large 20L army style cans and used many when off roading., Never had any issues.
Had plastic ones leak though.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
According to the Morrisons web site, http://your.morrisons.com/Help-and-information/Store-services/Fill-up-at-your-convenience/ you're only supposed to use metal cans up to 10l and plastic ones up to 5l.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Take both cars to Morrisons late at night when it's empty.
Park them either side of the same pump.
Fill both cars from the same nozzle in a single transation.
If you're unwilling to stretch the hose around to the other side of the car, and the fillers are on the same side on both cars, you may have to reverse one in. Otherwise make sure that the car with the furthest filler is on the side you pick up the nozzle from.
That'll be 80l. Use metal cans to get you to the magic 100.0 -

Thanks, does kind of contradict what law says... 23l? And from hse, its 'stored', not 'carried' as per morrisons terms. Still if they say 2x5l is max then so be it0 -
Also some filling stations are quite hot on people filling up Jerry cans,
my local Sainsburys wont let me fill 20L cans with Diesel for my generator despite there being no law on how much diesel can be stored as its not considered as a dangerous product unlike petrol but they have been told not to let anyone fill 20l cans and they wont.0 -

Bit of a ball ache to do though, have done it once when we were empty on weekend, but i dont get back from work till 7 in week, daughter usually asleep by then so wife cant drive.0 -
Be sure that you can actually get 100 litres and that there is not a max £ value on the pump.
I have a M-Benz Sprinter camper with a 120 litre long-range fuel tank.
I have twice had to complain at Tesco when I couldn't get the full 100 litre that the money off coupons say that you can have.
The damn pump cut off at £100!
I had to complain to the manager to get the remaining amount to get it up to a total of 100 litres.0 -
