Unwanted texts from school

If the time is early then why would the mobile be on anyway? If it's on then surely that means the person's day has started so a text wouldn't be a problem. If something urgent came up at that time of day I wouldn't be calling a mobile as I'd expect it to be off but call the home-phone.
Why should the OP turn off their mobile to suit the school?

If it's an android phone there are apps such that'll automatically silence/turn off notifications depending on the time of day. And most messaging apps will allow you to set custom tones -including silent - by contact. And allow you to simply block the sender.

Possibly but thats not my point.

SMS delivery to the end device is NOT time limited, once you send a text it will sit on the network for a set time awaiting delivery.

In most cases the delivery to the end user is relatively quick, but if the users not in a service area, or the system is busy (think new years eve), or sometime for absolutly no good reason, texts can be delayed or if they can't be delivered while still in the validity period may never be delivered.

You misunderstand my post, I'm agreeing with you and saying that there is a good chance the texts are probably queued to send at some time prior to the actual sending, and then automatically sending at 8am.

Or of course, queued by congestion and arriving some time after being sent?

    What a strange attitude!

I don't know anyone who thinks they need to switch off their mobile out of hours, that would be like pulling the plug out of the wall on the home phone. Why would you want to do that?

You do know that many people only have a mobile phone these days.

My mobile hasn't been off for years (other than when buying a new phone or when it reboots after a firmware update or app install).

It's first thing in the morning, isn't it normal that the phone is off?

Seems strange to me, but I'm always willing to learn new things. I switch off my phone when I go to bed and switch it on some time after I get up. Even if I'm away on holiday with only my mobile I switch it off at night.

OP I hope by now you have found a solution from the practical advice you've had on this thread.

We all use our mobiles differently - I don't switch mine off, but its also never in my bedroom/anywhere it would disturb me - it lives either downstairs or in my bag. Just because I get a text notification, doesn't mean I feel the need to read it straightaway. And I definitely wouldn't consider a text to be urgent or anything to concern myself about unduly. So in those respects, a text that arrived from my daughter's school at 8am on a Sunday would just invoke a shrug of the shoulders from me.

Voicemail is off (as it is with almost everyone I know). Why would you want to pay to pick up messages when they could just be a PPI or home energy sales call?

That's another new one for me. I only pick up messages if I know the number and would be annoyed if I had to call someone and the answer function wasn't on.

Just to update I managed to contact the teachers2parents who run the txt service and they are going to get my number removed,99% of texts I receive are now not relevant to my child as she is in 6th form, this txt on Sunday tbh was just a final straw as I had asked a few times for the school to remove my number and they said they couldn't,that's why I was just asking for advice not the ins and outs of whether or not my phone should be switched on or not,in my case yes it is left on just in case of emergencies so relatives can contact us,thanks to everyone who gave practical advice.
  • Looking at the website that OP posted, the school office can target message by year group. The fact you are getting messages not appropriate to your 6th form child is just pure laziness and the reason why they say they can't or more likely won't remove your number.

This laziness is costing your school money and means some other more useful resource cannot be provided.

My DS school, we have emails sent from office targeted by form or year group sent FOC from school office. For more urgent messages we are encouraged to follow the School twitter account and make sure notifications are switched on so these are pushed through straight away. In the last year we only got two, one for school closure due to snow and the other to say that sports day had been cancelled and not to turn up to watch.

Sadly many schools spend money to make life easier for staff at the cost of providing educational beneficial resources. For a school with 1,000 pupils costs the school over £3,000 per year!!! This can buy a lot of books for the school library for example

    first world problems ..

I think you are making a big deal out of nothing much ...You could just turn the volume down on your phone ..

    That's not the point though.
I can't stand companies texting me, which is why I only give my mobile phone out to selected companies.
Other companies is a big fat fakie.
