London set to ban older private petrol and diesel cars

I don't know what difference it's going to make on emissions you see the odd 12 year old hatchback in the city (namely mine). it's quite a rare site to see older vehicles there.
I'm all for a cleaner environment but sometimes these so called think tanks do come up with a lot of bull. Often ramming their belifs onto others. Was watching a documentry about parking in a small town somewhere in the country. Mayor was a militant cyclist and wants to make the entire city centre like oxford or cambridge unis where everybody cycles everywhere.
Put parking control everywhere. Restrictions abound like it was the centre of London or something - but it looked like a small 50K population town in the North.
if you read again I was referring to making London a ped zone only making HGV's redundant.

As someone that runs older diesels, I wondered what crap they were coming out with next.
It clearly stated diesels in the subject, but then noticed you had took the time to criticise someone who -like me- doesn't care too much about London.
You seemed puzzled that 4 people had liked it. Me being one of them, I felt I could spare a moment or two to respond.0 -

Look at Green led Brighton and there horrific manipulation of policies against the motorist - Brighton is essentially an outpost of London.
I expect as a motorist to be squeezed for parking and driving a little in cities, but Brighton is one place off my list.
It could happen in the city's, yes. But not being a city dweller, I'll be in the clear.0 -
I, for one, also don't give a tinkers about whether my comments are considered relevant to the thread, or not.
Neither am I prepared to be dictated to with regards to my comments.....!
A forum is for advice, and comment......[as well as support!!!]
Don't like it, move somewhere else?
You are of course correct - you are perfectly entitled to make any comment you see fit.
As is anyone else, who may or may not comment on what kind of dozy bell end opens a thread about London purely to tell everyone else he doesn't care about London.0 -
Going back to what I was reading about Germany, apparently only about 7% of diesels on the road are too old to be categorised.
This might mean a couple of things, I'd venture to suggest.
Perhaps they don't actually need a badge system and any enforcement, as the gradual replacement of old cars by newer ones would be doing the job anyway.
But it might also mean that if pollution is still increasing while diesel car emissions are decreasing through increasing standards of control gear on the cars, perhaps diesel cars are not entirely responsible for the problem.
One German forum I saw had someone alleging that while cars are compelled to have the yellow or increasingly the green sticker, these improvements are not being mandated at the same rate for buses. I have no idea whether this assertion has any grounds or not.
There are allegations in London that there are special lower emissions buses dedicated to the routes which pass known monitoring points.0 -

Fine particulate in London comes mainly from Diesels. Some NO2 is emitted directly but is mainly formed through reactions of sunlight on other pollutants. However, these come from vehicles and aircraft. Notice Heathrow and the North Circular here.
Unfortunately NO2 is difficult to measure during a vehicle test, and is only regulated indirectly through the primary pollutants emitted. How much NO2 in the atmosphere is formed depends upon sunlight as well. So if you reduce the primary pollutants from the car in the regulated type approval test by 50%, you might only reduce the NO2 eventually produced by say 25% for example.
For a time the technology used to trap particles increased primary NO2, but since it wasn't measured during the test the manufacturers didn't care!0 -

Yes, but one big whinge by that clean air campaign bloke is that those emissions are increasing.
And this while diesel car emissions are improving, from the point of view of both nitrogen oxides and particulates.
Particulates and nitrogen and sulphur oxides also come from burning heating oil, and so far those emissions are less controlled. Is the bloke going to campaign to ban oil central heating as well as diesel cars? What about buses?0 -
German air pollution levels were higher in 2011 than in previous years, despite environmental zones banning certain cars from urban areas. Authorities attribute the rise to weather and industry.

I read another article about emissions from ships on the Rhine0 -
