Would you expect work men to clean up afterwards?

  • Fair enough if it creates a lot of dust.

While maybe not covering the work top, if it was me i'd certainly be covering the fiddly things like the cooker top. It's going to be a right pig to clean that properly. If it's a good flat surface like a work top then a simple wiping, but fiddly areas? A cover would do. We even had rolls of bin bags they could've used if they didn't have anything themselves.
  • Yeah i thought it may be ok as i thought i remembered phone wiring being flimsy stuff. Even still, not the point really (though i appreciate what you're saying).

Yeah i read that about BT. Bit of a rip off.

Could be an excuse to fit an upgraded socket - one with a connection for broadband into the router.

yes, I don't know what plasterers do in these situations.

clearly the socket-both faceplate and box has to come off. If the wires get damaged and you've got slack in the cable coming into the house then strip back the cable-no problem. As I understand it any master socket installation has to be carried out by a bt engineeer.

    Then comes the bill.

Personally, in normal circumstances, I'd have a go at it myself-have done and got out of ridiculous £300 of bt charges. Woman across the street got a bit of crackling on her phone line. Engineer turned up. Wiped inside of socket with a tissue to get rid of a little bit of damp-next thing you know bill of £100. Refused to pay-got out of it.

The essential thing to remember is that anything up to the master socket is their responsibility, anything after ours!

if you get bt to re-instate it they will want heavy readies.
  • Guess i need to learn how to start playing with wires then.

Tradesmen have to pay to dispose of rubbish and also have to have a waste carrier's licence now, so unless the rubbish can go in your domestic bin many will leave it for you to make arrangements.

What was agreed with the tradesmen first, as some will come into a room, dust sheet everything and tidy up, others will treat the place as a building site and assume others are responsible for clearance. If the house is empty the may have assumed that any carpets present are going to be replaced when the work is done. If you want the tradesmen to include time and materials for dust sheeting throughout then you can expect the quote to be increased accordingly.

Usually they plaster over things

note there are two versions of the Linebox, one with punch-down / IDC connections for the incoming line, and one with screw terminals. Not all dropwire types are suitable for IDC.

Not a Plasterer , but run a business which sells fireplaces, so a lot of knocking out, replastering etc done by the fitting teams.

I inform all customers who buy from me, that we don't take away any rubble, rubbish etc, but will put it in rubble bags and put it outside somewhere convenient for them. The lads will put it in a skip for them, if the customer orders one. Also say we do put dust sheets down, but as the lads do a few jobs a day, the sheets could be dirty and if you are keeping carpets, you will need to add more protection yourself.

It is all written down in the T&C's of the order they sign in my shop ( In bold print too !) . I think I may have had , say 5 complaints in 20 years. One was for a burn mark on a carpet, which was ' supposed ' to be high end carpet.. Got local carpet store to go round for me to investigate and was told the carpet was manky, stunk of dog pee and his feet were actually sticking to the carpet. The carpet was supposed to be rolled back anyway as they were also told in T&C's.

I do think that you need to take some responsibility in protecting your property when having work done in your house, it is your stuff, it isn't up to other people to work around things you don't protect.

Can't be bothered, why should people respect you or your property, when you refer to your wife as 'the wife' ? Give respect out if you expect to get it back.

Edited to add: Your wife is probably used to being talked down to by you, and so the workmen treated her the same way. I would not have allowed them to get away with it.

You silly man/woman/whateveryouare - stop talking out of your backside!!!

I'm all for listening to opinions from the other side of the coin, but don't chat such utter tosh!!

I bet you're like one of these people who see couples walking a stride apart & then tell others that they've 'clearly' just had a big bust up, look at the body language ....... trying to analyse something that doesn't need analysing.

There's the saying if you don't have anything nice to say, well on the forums how about if you don't have anything helpful to add then don't bother.

Take your preaching elsewhere & stop looking for something that isn't even there!!!!!!!!
  • What was agreed with the tradesmen first.
We didn't discuss the removal with them.

Depending on how you look at it, we didn't discuss it with them, they didn't discuss it with us, simply - it wasn't discussed.

On the topic of contracts - there wasn't one. This was a verbal quote & paid in cash.
The other job we had done, there was no contract, but there was quotation paperwork detailing what job was to be carried out. We paid an instalment in cash & the rest is to be cheque or preferably bank transfer.

I suppose you can't compare the two, but having only had 2 jobs done, it's all we can do.

I guess from reading this thread it simply varies from tradesman to tradesman. The chap who came & did out my mums fire didn't mention about removing - he just did. He laid out dust sheets each day & removed all the rubbish (& there was a lot) no questions asked, just done. The guy who did our drive - equally as clean. So i suppose not everyone is as tidy.

Still not happy about some of the other things that have happened though - such as the wallpaper thing.
Very little (nothing even) we can do about it now. Just hope it can be covered without having to re-paper.
